The internet’s had a good laugh over the past couple of days thanks to a petition from a hardcore Christian group calling for Netflix to cancel Good Omens, even though the apocalyptic comedy-drama is actually made by Amazon Prime. Over 20,000 people signed the petition before it was taken down once the creators realized their error.
Now, however, the petition is back with a vengeance. Christian organization Return to Order has updated their original post with an added apology concerning the fact that they previously misdirected their efforts to the wrong company entirely.
“Due to an oversight by Return to Order staff, this petition originally listed Netflix as responsible for the offensive series ‘Good Omens.’ Amazon Video released the series on May 31. We regret the mistake, and the protests will be delivered to Amazon when the campaign is complete.”
The rest of the petition remains the same, brandishing Good Omens as “blasphemous” and accusing it of “mock[ing] God’s wisdom” for – get this – having God played by a woman (Frances McDormand voices the deity in the role of narrator). Overall, the series is labelled as “a denial of Good and Evil.”
Previously, showrunner Neil Gaiman has poked fun at the petition on social media for the original Netflix/Amazon mix-up. The best response, though, has to go to the Netflix UK & Ireland Twitter account which retweeted the petition, promising that they won’t make any more. Hilariously, Amazon then responded to Netflix, saying they’ll cancel Stranger Things.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Amazon will make any more Good Omens, either. Gaiman has maintained that he has no plans for a second season, as the first run served as a complete adaptation of the novel he wrote with Terry Pratchett back in 1990. Likewise, he’s played down the chances of any spinoffs happening, too. I suppose the good news here, then, is that this petition still won’t have any impact whatsoever.
