This news was announced over the weekend at Comic-Con, along with a trailer that teased the Enterprise will be having some trouble with Tribbles in the series. Now, we’ve got two first look photos which reveal the return of the fan favorite characters, as played by Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn.

We’re unsure if all three will unite in Short Treks season 2, as these may be from two separate episodes. One will definitely revolve around Spock and Number One stuck in a turbolift though, so that suggests Pike won’t appear. Perhaps Mount’s captain will get his own outing, then. The third one, meanwhile, set onboard the Enterprise will feature guest star H. Jon Benjamin as a scientist fascinated with Tribbles.

As for the other half of the season, two of the episodes will be animated, teasing the arrival of the Lower Decks comedy series that’s on its way, and the final installment will act as a prelude to Star Trek: Picard, Patrick Stewart’s long-awaited return that’s due later this year.

Hopefully, these Short Treks are a tease for that spinoff we all want. After season 2 wrapped and the Enterprise crew returned to their own ship, fans flocked to social media to campaign for more adventures set before the dawn of the Kirk era. EP Alex Kurtzman has hinted that the idea’s possible, so fingers crossed these mini-episodes are just testing the water for more of them to come.

Star Trek: Short Treks season 2 doesn’t have a release date just yet, but watch out for it soon on CBS All Access.
