Lando in Solo A Star Wars Story

Donald Glover Reportedly Returning For Lando Calrissian Disney Plus Series

Up until Solo: A Star Wars Story, the Star Wars franchise had been virtually bulletproof at the box office, with each installment dating back to A New Hope in 1977 turning a huge profit. Solo failed to even crack $400 million worldwide though, becoming the lowest-grossing live-action entry in the series in the process, and after losing Disney and Lucasfilm so much money, the studio were forced to abandon their plan of releasing a new Star Wars movie on an annual basis.

Solo is by no means a bad film, it just feels like an entirely unnecessary one that’s of very little importance to the Star Wars mythology as a whole. Ron Howard did a decent enough job for a replacement director hired with shooting well underway, but the pic ultimately just feels incredibly safe and workmanlike.

What can’t be denied though is that Donald Glover is the highlight of the entire movie as Lando Calrissian, easily outshining the title character with an effortlessly cool and charismatic performance. There isn’t exactly much interest in a sequel to Solo, but the continued adventures of Lando would definitely please the fans. After all, even before Solo was released there’d been talk of a big screen Lando spinoff, with Glover keen to reprise the role.

And now, with Ewan McGregor’s return to the Star Wars franchise as Obi-Wan Kenobi, along with the shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney Plus looks like the place to be for small screen spinoffs based on fan-favorite characters. Glover’s Lando Calrissian certainly fits that bill, and sources close to WGTC have revealed that the actor is set to return for a Lando TV series on the streaming service, which would take place after the events of Solo.

This is the same insider that broke the news to us about McGregor reprising his role as Obi-Wan way back in May, so they’ve proven themselves to be a reliable source. Donald Glover is a very busy man though, so it remains to be seen when he’ll have the time to fit an effects-heavy sci-fi series into an already packed schedule, but if The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan turn out be successful, then you can be sure the demand for a Lando spinoff will only increase. Maybe it’ll even be announced this weekend at D23? Fingers crossed.
