Anime might just be one of the best mediums to highlight the varieties of goth girls out there. While live actions often stick to characters dripped in black, anime takes their designs to a whole new level.

Many goth girls are often surrounded by some existential dread. This is why we can’t simply use an outfit to judge. However, don’t get things twisted, as some of them are super stylish! Nonetheless, they’re mostly beloved by fans for their unique worldview, alternative lifestyles, punk styles, and dramatic or quirky personalities. In anime, there aren’t too many who embrace the gothic subculture, but when they show up, they often steal the crowd!

10. Hyouka Fuwa (Shimoneta)

Hyouka Fuwa is a first-year student and science club president at Tokioka Academy. While living in a society where all things considered lewd have been strictly prohibited, Hyouka becomes very interested in the act of “body-melding”. She is known to be quiet, anti-social, and quirky. Spending most of her time in the laboratory watching flies mate, Hyouka is always in her white lab coat and always has bags under her eyes.

9. Himiko Toga (My Hero Academia)

Himiko Toga is a member of the League of Villains and a major antagonist in the series. With her bloodthirsty tendencies, Toga has the ability to ingest the blood of anyone and shapeshift into them. She is known to be mentally unstable and has a twisted perception of love. Despite this, Toga is shown to be very cheerful and friendly, that is when her sadistic side isn’t scaring people off.

8. Rory Mercury (Gate)

Demigoddess and apostle of Emroy, Rory Mercury is a 900-year-old in the body of a 13-year-old. She is known to slaughter anyone who offends her god or those deemed punishable by death. Her goth style is a perfect cosplay opportunity for any fan. Rory carries her halberd as a scythe and has since acquired the nickname Rory the Reaper. Despite having a very friendly personality, she shows no mercy to those she considers her enemies.

7. Road Kamelot (D. Gray Man)

Ninth disciple of the Noah Family, and current reincarnation of Road, Kamelot has an eerie charm and an enigmatic personality. Despite being over 35 years old, she has the body of a teen and behaves in a somewhat childish manner. Usually donning her gothic-lolita dresses, Road has the ability to take on the form of a doll and conceal herself. She is known to be deeply affectionate towards her family, and has a great fondness for Allen Walker.

6. Yuno Gasai (Future Diary)

Yuno Gasai is the female protagonist of the series and the owner of the Diary of Future Love. She is mostly sweet and shy until her cold and ruthless side creeps up. Yuno has an unstable personality and an obsessive devotion to Yukiteru Amano. She is very twisted and is willing to do anything for her and Yukiteru’s survival, including killing anyone who gets in her way.

5. Medusa Gorgon (Soul Eater)

Formerly a student and nurse at Death Weapon Meister Academy, Medusa is the second Gorgon sister. She presented herself as someone the students could rely on and come to for advice, however, she cares for no one but herself. As a scientist, Medusa is willing to use anyone including her own child for her experiments.

Yet another traditional goth girl in anime is Soul Eater’s Arachne. As the head of Arachnophobia and the eldest of the Gorgon Sisters, Arachne is a sophisticated and aristocratic witch with a sinister personality. She has spider-based abilities that make her a formidable opponent. With the appearance of a classy vampire, Arachne is calm and collected in every situation, choosing to be pragmatic.

3. Misa Amane (Death Note)

Misa Amane is a typical goth girl and staunch supporter of Kira, eventually coming to own a Death Note of her own. She is a typically cheerful person despite the trauma she suffered after witnessing the death of her parents. She’s cloaked in punk outfits and edgy makeup throughout her time on the show. Her actions with the death note are fueled by her worship of, and love for Light Yagami.

2. Kurumi Tokisaki (Date A Live)

Known for her enigmatic and unpredictable personality, Kurumi Tokisaki is an antagonist in the series. She is a spirit with a deep dislike for humanity caused by distrust. Kurumi frequently acts like an innocent and curious girl, but in reality, is a crazy person with no regard for human life. She regards people as a disposable food source.

1. Sunako Kirishiki (Shiki)

Who better to show off the traditional goth style than Sunako? Sunako Kirishiki is a young and cheerful girl who enjoys reading books. Despite her young appearance, Sunako is the oldest of the group and is the leader of the Shiki. Killing for her survival, she drains humans of their blood. Sunako is known to be very caring with hopes of creating a safe place for the Shiki.
