Although it seems much of Earth-38’s mythology concerning supervillains began with Kara’s emergence as Supergirl, some key components are far behind us, such as Lex Luthor’s heyday. But that only makes sense when you consider that he’s Superman’s archnemesis, not the heroine this series focuses on.
You have to admit that the X-Men haven’t received the best treatment in recent years, despite being one of Marvel’s most beloved properties. Thankfully, things have taken a more positive turn as of late as our favorite mutants have had their line of books gradually expanded, one addition of which is the much talked about X-Men Gold.
Perhaps some of you will agree with me in saying that the Superman line of books have offered some of the best hooks and mysteries the young Rebirth era has seen, especially what has been found in the pages of Action Comics. Much of the credit can go to Dan Jurgens because, at this point, writing stories featuring the Man of Steel is probably as easy as breathing to him.
Although DC renumbered most series in its line when Rebirth kicked off last summer, they thankfully returned some of their oldest flagship titles to original numbering, specifically Detective Comics and Action Comics. This may not seem like a big deal to the average Joe, but when you take into account that ‘Tec will soon hit the 950 milestone – and eventually 1000 – there’s no denying that is quite the impressive feat.
Scooby Apocalypse could have easily been a disaster if it were placed in the wrong hands, yet it became one of the better oddball comics you'll find on shelves today.
If yet another logo change and the confirmed involvement of Doctor Strange weren't enough to get you excited for Thor: Ragnarok (admit it, the latter did it more for you), leave it to Marvel Studios' man of vision Kevin Feige to keep chatter going.
Before highly anticipated new series such as Luke Cage launch this spring, Marvel has a few other titles kicking off, namely America. Focusing on America Chavez, this title is set to have writer Gabby Rivera (Juliet Takes a Breath) and artist Joe Quinones (Howard the Duck) at the helm, so those who love the current rising crop of young heroes developed by this publisher will definitely want to take notice.
Although a third and final full theatrical trailer for Wonder Woman will no doubt drop at some point between now and the film’s release, we’ll take whatever we can get when it comes to the iconic Amazon Princess. And seeing as how there was no Super Bowl advertisement last night, this newly released international TV spot is most welcome.
Something we’ve seen from various comic book publishers in recent years is an attempt to align their titles with their big and small screen counterparts. Although the source material inspires the live action adaptations, it doesn’t hurt to when the former takes a few cues from the latter. After all, new readers are often hooked when they see something comparable to a movie or TV show they love.
Milestone issues are something that take priority with anyone who collects comics, especially when they pertain to a character as old and popular as Batman. And considering that Detective Comics will be hitting the 950 mark this week, it’s probably safe to assume this one won’t take long to fly off shelves.
