David Dobkin is well-known for his nutty, ludicrous comedies, like Wedding Crashers, Fred Claus and The Change-Up, but this fall he'll be delving into more dramatic territory with The Judge, a thriller that follows an attorney (Robert Downey Jr.) who returns to his hometown for his mother's funeral, only to find that his hostile, Alzheimer's-afflicted father (Robert Duvall), the town's judge, stands accused of murder.
DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar has somehow spawned two sequels, a short film, two holiday specials and a spinoff Nickelodeon series called The Penguins of Madagascar, all since 2005. That Nickelodeon series, centered on the escapades of the four paramilitary-like penguins who became fan favorites after appearing in Madagascar, is now making the trip to the big screen in a movie called Penguins of Madagascar.
Though Cars 2 fizzled and Monsters University didn't really offer much to Monsters Inc. fans, Pixar has proven with Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 that it understands how to make great sequels. So we're holding out hope for Finding Dory, a sequel to Oscar winner Finding Nemo, especially because the first film's director Andrew Stanton is back on board. Unfortunately, we won't get to see it until 2016 because of The Good Dinosaur getting delayed and moved to Dory's spot, but at least we've got some interesting news about the film to tide us over.
Marvel recently started rolling out new character posters for its upcoming tentpole, Guardians of the Galaxy, and today that part of the studio's marketing campaign is complete. On Monday, we got a poster highlighting the feisty Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and living tree Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). Then, yesterday, a poster centered on the beautiful, deadly assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana) was unveiled.
Though Kylie Minogue is best known for her singing career, having won a Grammy Award, released 12 albums and served as a judge on the U.K. version of The Voice, she actually got her start as an actress on the soap opera Neighbors. Since then, she's dabbled in acting a few times, appearing on an episode of Doctor Who and in films like Moulin Rouge!, Jack & Diane and Holy Motors. Now, she's signed on for another supporting role, in the Dwayne Johnson-led earthquake thriller San Andreas.
Hot off her acclaimed turn as a Polish woman struggling to survive in America in James Gray's period drama The Immigrant, French actress Marion Cotillard is set delve right back into another period romance, this time with auteur Nicole Garcia. The film, titled Mal De Pierres, sounds like another potential awards contender for Cotillard.
Ever since his scene-stealing turn as Bumper Allen in the a capella comedy Pitch Perfect, Workaholics actor Adam DeVine has been highly in demand. He was in the running to play John Belushi in a biopic, recently appeared in a multi-episode arc on Modern Family and will star in horror comedy The Final Girls. Now, DeVine has found his highest-profile project yet, having just signed on for a supporting role opposite Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in Warner Bros.' The Intern.
With the middling success of Cars 2, Brave and Monsters University, Pixar has been stuck in a bit of a rut over the past few years. Luckily, the animation studio's upcoming slate looks primed to deliver the same kind of inventive, exhilarating family adventures that put Pixar on the map in the first place. And none of them look more promising than 2015's Inside Out, which travels inside the mind of a young girl.
By all accounts, Phil Lord and Chris Miller succeeded in delivering a worthy sequel to their comedy smash hit 21 Jump Street with this month's 22 Jump Street. At almost two hours long, the movie is packed with raunchy humor and over-the-top action sequences, but it remarkably never drags on. As it turns out, Lord and Miller are well-aware that their movie is essentially a feature-length compilation of ridiculous jokes, and as an experiment, cut all of humor out for what ended up being a 10-minute "conceptual piece."
