The top movies on the Netflix global chart are pretty diverse this week, from recent originals like Ben Wheatley's Rebecca to horror pictures such as The Purge: Anarchy and Cadaver. Sneaking onto the list, however, is the Seth Rogen-starring Neighbors, with the 2014 comedy currently sitting at sixth place in the worldwide rankings. Why, then, might the pic be getting so much love right now?
The introduction of the Timeless Child backstory at the end of the most recent season of Doctor Who was, to put it lightly, a controversial move. Retconning much of what we know about the Doctor and the history of Time Lords, the decision means that the lead character is something very different to what we first thought. A new theory, however, is now suggesting that the Master could also be a Timeless Child.
Netflix provides a great platform for rediscovering older and maybe forgotten movies, whether they be horror films, comedies, or anything else for that matter. With the Halloween season well and truly upon us now, there are plenty of scary pictures in the Top 10 for the streamer, including 2014's The Purge: Anarchy, which is currently sitting as the sixth most-watched movie on the global charts. Why, then, might this sequel be doing so well?
The long-awaited fourth entry in the Evil Dead franchise (discounting the remake) is coming to us as Evil Dead Rise. Lee Cronin is behind the camera for this one, though it won't arrive for a while considering that shooting is only expected to begin in 2021. And although Bruce Campbell has more or less ruled himself out of making an appearance, he's recently been sharing details on the project, including the decision to go with a lead heroine.
Best known for their work on Killer Klowns from Outer Space, the Chiodo Brothers are now bringing a more kid-friendly animated special to Netflix. Titled Alien Xmas, this movie is adapted from their 2015 book, and uses stop-motion animation to tell the story of Santa and his elves fighting invaders. The first footage from the picture, due to arrive on November 20th, has now been revealed as part of Netflix's preview of the month.
It's fair to say that Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive isn't one of the highlights of the author's career. The 1986 film is his only directorial effort, and is notable for its bizarre living machines and mix of comedy and horror. Despite the experience working on the movie pretty much putting King off from getting behind the camera ever again, though, his son Joe Hill has now thought up a way of making Maximum Overdrive relevant for 2020.
Deciding upon the most unsettling horror films is a tough business, given the subjectivity of the genre. A recent study, which is probably pushing the boundaries of "scientific", has used a survey of people's heart rates while watching scary movies to establish some of the best and most impactful experiences for viewers. While the list is restricted to top 50 highest-rated items on different review platforms, it has already thrown up some intriguing data. One part of the report focused on which five of the top titles gave the biggest jump scares for participants, and there are some good choices.
Netflix can't seem to get enough of Adam Sandler at the moment, from the recent success of Hubie Halloween, to the ongoing popularity of his films across the platform. On top of all that, the streamer have now shared some first look images of Sandler's latest, basketball movie Hustle, which will see him play a scout who's fired after finding a player in Europe, and brings him to the U.S. to try and break into the NBA.
The new go-around on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has had a rough time of it this year, with Legendary Pictures' production experiencing some abrupt behind-the-scenes changes. A few months ago, original directors Ryan and Andy Tohill were replaced by David Blue Garcia, with shooting having to be restarted. However, things do now appear to be moving forward, and today we received an official website for the movie, as well as some poster art.
