After some viral marketing and a truly tantalizing teaser, Paramount finally pulled the lid off of Ghost in the Shell, revealing to the world just what an explosive, dazzling sci-fi epic they have planned for us. So far, reactions to the first full trailer have been slightly mixed though definitely leaning more towards positive, and after watching it several times, we're definitely sold.
Dave Chappelle appeared as the host on last night's episode of Saturday Night Live, and to say he delivered would be an understatement. The comedian was on top form, delivering laugh after laugh, a timely monologue about the current political state in the US and some truly side-splitting skits. The highlight, though, was the one in which he spoofed the shocking season 7 premiere of AMC's The Walking Dead.
It's becoming increasingly more difficult to find smart sci-fi these days, especially in the mainstream. Most of the genre's recent efforts have focused more on dazzling effects and one upping each other with city-wide destruction so bombastic that it'd make even Michael Bay shudder. But then comes along a film like Denis Villeneuve's Arrival, a confident, smart, genuine and touching piece of sci-fi that instantly turns heads.
Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange looks set to continue its box office dominance this weekend after conjuring up another $14.9 million from Friday night showings. Analysts now predict it to accumulate a total of roughly $40-$45 million this weekend, which would give Scott Derrickson's film another first place finish.
Not too long ago, Warner Bros. made the rather unsurprising announcement that David Ayer's Suicide Squad would be getting an Extended Cut for its Digital HD/Blu-ray release. The former will arrive next week, on November 15th, while the latter will be with us on December 13th. So, not too long then till we get to see all the footage left on the cutting room floor, and to help whet our appetite, the studio's released a brand new TV spot that features a brief, never before seen shot of the Clown Prince of Crime himself, Mr. J.
After causing quite a stir with his horror film The Witch, which was divisive, to say the least, director Robert Eggers is staying firmly in the genre which put him on the map. That's because he's set to remake the classic horror flick Nosferatu. He's been attached to it for a while now, actually, but it was only recently that he confirmed he'd be doing it as his next project.
Mr. Robot creator and showrunner Sam Esmail has made his dislike of President Elect Donald Trump very clear on social media, but he's now shared a "leaked" script page from season 3 showing how Elliot (Rami Malek) would react to the news. Needless to say, it sums up how many people are probably feeling right now. Elliot is far from a positive person, and his view of society is pretty bleak. However, it definitely sounds like the thought of President Trump has made him lose all faith in his fellow Americans.
Marvel has found great success on Netflix, but their fortunes have been a little mixed on ABC. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ratings have plummeted since the series premiere, Agent Carter was cancelled after just two seasons, and the network pulled the plug on Mockingbird spinoff Marvel's Most Wanted before the pilot even made it to air.
Marvel Studios and director Ryan Coogler have been putting together an incredible cast for Black Panther, but one of the most exciting additions has to be The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira. While it would be easy to assume that the Creed helmer probably chose the actress based on her role in the critically acclaimed AMC series, it turns out that wasn't the case.
Though Ant-Man wasn't a massive hit for Marvel, it still managed to make a pretty nice sum at the box office and scored fairly well with critics. It's got a pretty rabid fanbase too, one that champions it as a definite success for the studio and is eagerly awaiting its sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp. No matter where you fall in regards to Peyton Reed's first entry into the MCU, I think we can all agree that the film, like so many Marvel efforts before it, featured a pretty underwhelming villain.
