Since his death in 2010, famously reclusive author J.D. Salinger has been the subject of far more scrutiny than he ever would have permitted during his lifetime. He was the topic of the problematic documentary Salinger in 2013, which many agreed did not quite fulfill its promise, and his unpublished works remain tantalizingly out of reach. Now, he is to be the focus of a new fiction film titled Coming Through the Rye, where the author will be portrayed by none other than consummate character actor Chris Cooper.
Has there been a superhero movie quite so fraught as Ant-Man? Since the departure of Edgar Wright as director, Marvel's movie about the remarkable shrinking man has gone through several different permutations, including a major script rewrite by Adam McKay and star Paul Rudd. Now, we are finally beginning to get a picture of what this Ant-Man will look like...and apparently Rudd's Scott Lang will have a slight change of profession.
Up until this point, I have been massively skeptical of the upcoming and updated version of Annie, the adorable musical about an adorably upbeat orphan and her adorable relationship with an adorable billionaire. It's just been too much adorableness for me. But with the latest (and final) trailer for the film, which stars Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx, the veil of my jaded cynicism has lifted ever so-slightly.
I will admit to having mixed feelings about Nicole Kidman. The actress has had some interesting roles in her varied career, but she's only rarely proven herself to be more than just a pretty face. Her appearance in Stoker gave the lie to anyone who thinks she can't act, but the ill-conceived Grace of Monaco showcased her ephemeral beauty and little else. Now the actress is in talks to replace Gwyneth Paltrow in The Secret in Their Eyes, a remake of an Argentine thriller.
It's Monday and you know what that means: Star Wars: Episode VII Rumor Day! Yay! Although, actually, this little tidbit of news is less rumor and more hype, but why split hairs on Star Wars: Episode VII Rumor Day? This is a day for everyone to sit back and enjoy some quality hype.
A Most Violent Year has the look and sound of a mid-career Martin Scorsese film - and that's a very good thing. With a cast including Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac, J.C. Chandor's forbidding-looking drama will premiere at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles this Thursday. In preparation for that, we get to see a few new trailers from the US and the UK, both of them making a compelling case for the quality of the film.
There are many things wrong with cinema today, but SpongeBob Squarepants is not one of them. Beloved of children and surreal-minded adults alike, the adventures of the bizarre little sea-sponge and his gang have kept many entertained for years now. It was only a matter of time before SpongeBob got his own 3D film, and now here it is, as we have the first trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
As more great films get made into TV shows, we can expect some excellent versions of beloved films, and some not-so-excellent ones. FX's Fargo, for instance, has been a rousing success, due mostly to its departure from the actual plot of the original. Will the same prove true for Syfy's attempt to do a TV series based around Terry Gilliam's brilliantly crazed 12 Monkeys? Based on the new trailer, the answer is...maybe.
With Halloween coming up tomorrow, new information about Disney's adaptation of Ray Bradbury's seminal October novel Something Wicked This Way Comes seems rather apropos. The planned film version of the fantastic novel already has a director in the form of author/screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, and now, it also has a writer: Wrath of the Titans scribe David Leslie Johnson.
Jordan Peele has made his name in comedy, but a closely-allied genre is beginning to attract his attention. In addition to being part of Key & Peele, the actor intends to strike out on his own to work on the horror film Get Out, which he will write and direct.
