As movie theaters remain closed, studios have begun releasing certain titles on streaming platforms. Last month, Trolls World Tour was released straight to VOD and broke records on its way to becoming the biggest digital debut ever. According to the latest reports, the Universal/DreamWorks Animation production is close to earning $100 million just off of PVOD. It’s been such a success, Universal announced shortly after that they would explore straight-to-streaming options in the future for certain titles and skip the theatrical run all together. This did not sit well with theater owners as major chains, including AMC and Regal, announced that they would ban all Universal releases from their theaters in the future.
The last few months have sort of blended together in the absence of movies. In any other year, we would be hitting the middle of the summer blockbuster season. Today, in fact, was going to be the opening weekend for Fast & Furious 9. Instead, fans will have to wait until next spring before seeing Dom, Letty and the rest of the crew.
One subset of fans rejoicing over news of the Snyder Cut of Justice League finally being released are Ben Affleck supporters. Every time a new Batman movie is coming out, there will inevitably be backlash over the particular casting of certain characters. Michael Keaton got it back in the late ‘80s and even the Heath Ledger pick for Joker was initially met with contempt.
Despite starring in and co-writing the last Star Trek film, Simon Pegg fully admits that they will never come close to being as popular as the Marvel films. The sci-fi property was dormant for seven years following the disappointing box office returns for Star Trek: Nemesis. So Paramount handed the keys over to J.J. Abrams to reboot the series.
This August will mark the ten-year anniversary of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World releasing in theaters. Directed by Edgar Wright, the beloved movie is a tribute to not only comic book and video game fans, but pop culture enthusiasts, too.

After the petitions and billboards and flying banners, the fans are finally getting what they want. And don't expect some assembly cut, either.
Paramount's in desperate need of a reliable franchise. They had one in Transformers, but fans eventually got tired of the endless Michael Bay sequels. Bumblebee was a step in the right direction, but even that film earned less than the studio was hoping for. Nevertheless, they’re banking on Snake Eyes jumpstarting the world of G.I. Joe later this year (hopefully). But the studio has loftier ideas than just that.
One of the many reasons Tom Cruise has remained a major movie star for more than 30 years is because of his commitment to entertaining an audience. He'll do whatever it takes to achieve that goal no matter the cost. Heck, he's even looking to make an action film in space.
Today would have marked the 65th birthday for the late, great, Bill Paxton. The actor sadly passed away in 2017 following complications from open heart surgery, but despite leaving us far too soon, his career spanned nearly 40 years with performances in some of the biggest movies in history. He also has the rare distinction of being the only person to be killed by a Terminator, Xenomorph and Predator.
