Oh, how the tables have turned. In the hours leading up to Trump’s surrender to the Manhattan Criminal Court for his historic indictment this afternoon, U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) took to the streets of New York to protest. And let’s just say things didn’t go as planned for her.
Firstly, Greene was not met with the warmest of welcomes upon her arrival to the Big Apple. Large groups of protesters gathered in the streets to shoo her away, causing her to launch a tirade of complaints against New York including calling it a modern-day Gotham City (an oxymoron if there ever was one) and claiming drug addicts were falling over on every corner.
Nevertheless, it was her attempt to protest Trump’s indictment that backfired the most. As is customary for the far-right conspiracy theorist, she took to Twitter to complain. Those complaints, it turns out, were laced with both hypocrisy and racism after Greene called New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams a “thug” and asserted that he and his team of fellow thugs “assaulted” her by blowing whistles to drown out her protests.
Seemingly forgetting that she has a habit of chasing after people and harassing them with repeated questions, Greene’s words do nothing to prove her point and do everything to showcase the mindset in which she operates: Unless it looks like her, talks like her, thinks like her, and acts like her, it is “bad.” Or in the case of New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who is Black, it is considered the work of a “thug.”
Greene tried to back up her point with a screenshot that was sent out to anti-Trump and anti-Greene protestors ahead of the former president’s arraignment. Unfortunately for Greene, there’s no evidence within the text to corroborate her claims that “thugs” were called to “assault” her. Blowing a whistle from across the street and banging on pots and pans is not assault.
Greene also claimed that Mayor Eric Adams, who publicly called on Greene the day before to be on her best behavior in New York City, threatened her by “giving a dog whistle of violence against me,” which is about as coherent as the mumbo-jumbo that falls out Trump’s mouth.
Best of all, Senior Reporter at NBC News Ben Collins was on the ground near Greene’s protest, and in a turn of events one can only describe as karma, he shared video footage of a man handing out whistles; the same whistles Greene claimed were the act of “thugs.” The man is a MAGA supporter and according to him, “I like to make noise. I’m here to make noise. This is not the place to speak right now.”
Who has a temper tantrum after things don’t go their way, again? Oh, that’s right. A toddler.
