Have you ever seen those ill-researched memes touting superhero “facts” on your Facebook news feed that often don’t account for those plot points having taken place in an alternate universe? Not surprisingly, the Merc with a Mouth has fallen victim to this himself, with something akin to “Did you know that Deadpool once killed the entire Marvel Universe?”
Truth be told, he did and he didn’t. There was an out of continuity story, Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe, that delivered on its promise and got extremely metatextual (we’ll discuss that in a moment). As you no doubt surmised, it was highly successful, thus paving the way for Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe Again.
Make no mistake, this doesn’t sound like a sequel in the purest sense as Marvel describes it as “a DIFFERENT time Deadpool went a little too crazy and killed the entire Marvel Universe,” so they may very well not build on that cliffhanger that saw Wade Wilson ready to slay some of the publisher’s employees.
Written by Cullen Bunn and illustrated by Dalibor Talajic, this aims to be a five-issue series containing over the top carnage as only Deadpool can deliver. Bunn himself had the following to say in a recent interview with Marvel.com:
“Writing [the original] DEADPOOL KILLS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE was such a blast for me, so of course I wanted to return to that well at some point. I wouldn’t have pursued it though, unless I thought we have a new kind of story to tell and some interesting and unexpected angles to explore. The tale that we’re presenting here definitely gives us something new and exciting, so it’s time to pull the trigger!”
The first two issues of Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe are set to arrive in comic shops sometime this July.
