Oh, what a time to be alive. Not only is the superhero genre infiltrating television and cinema, but it's also rocking our gaming consoles with phenomenal titles. Whether it's the tactical brilliance of Batman: Arkham City or the imagination of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, there's something for everyone. Now, with the alluring promise of Injustice 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite on the horizon, the future's looking brighter than ever for superhero video games.

Marvel Super Heroes In War Of The Gems (1996)

Two decades ago, Capcom was already creating kickass Marvel games and taking names. At the time, Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems was all the rage on the SNES, making all the Genesis fanboys green with envy. With a roster that included Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man, and Wolverine, the story tied in with the “Infinity Gauntlet” arc as the heroes battled through Earth and space to seek out the aforementioned item.

The characters in the game were graded according to power and speed, which made for interesting battle scenarios. The balanced types, such as Wolverine and Captain America, were the natural favorites, because they’d bring the best of both worlds without compromising on attributes. Sadly, the game was released with only a single-player mode, so we never got to experience an Avengers-styled team-up with our friends at home.
