Despite the obvious connotations that the name implies, a big, fat question mark still dangles over what exactly Treasure Hunts are. Obviously, partaking in the activity will entail seeking out some sort of treasure – whether that be weapons, armor or other miscellaneous loot – at the behest of whoever created the map in the first place, but how Bungie intends for Guardians to actually trigger the hunt is a question that still remains unanswered.

Despite the general air of mystery surrounding the feature, however, various trailers released by the developer have made it somewhat possible to formulate an idea of how they fit into Destiny 2‘s content-packed sandbox. Flashpoints, a new weekly PvE activity that aims to funnel Guardians onto a single planet in order to complete different activities, have, upon completion, a chance of rewarding Treasure Keys. These can then presumably be used to dissolve the lock on any caches discovered through treasure hunts for an unspecified reward.

Furthermore, you can see via the video below that Treasure Maps, when discovered, appear on the map, accompanied by a description. In this case, lovable rogue Cayde-6 is the quest giver, his flavor text accompanying the icon likely to be a cryptic pointer as to the whereabouts of the stash.

Piece all of the above together, and you begin to get a clearer picture of what Treasure Maps are all about. How exactly the end result will differ to Adventures or Lost Sectors still remains to be seen, but hey, what would video games be without surprises?
