Cuphead is the long awaited run and gun 2D side scrolling title from developer Studio MDHR, and we were treated to more footage at PAX East this year.

Clearly inspired by 1930s cartoons, its gorgeous, cel shaded graphics and brilliant audio design scream the classic cartoon design of that era. Gameplay is centred on boss battles that can be selected in any order, but the big news from PAX is that MDHR have now added traditional platforming sequences to the games level design.

Cuphead could be destined to join the ever growing ranks of recent highly successful 2D scrollers such as Shovel Knight and Fez. From what we’ve seen so far, the game’s aesthetic and challenging gameplay certainly looks as though it’s likely to be a 2016 standout, and quite possibly one of Xbox One’s best indie titles.
