At their core, video games are supposed to be fun. In fact, their pure existence is based around entertainment, which is something that a lot of people seem to have forgotten these days.

Offering pure, unadulterated fun with a shitload of content, Ubisoft’s Far Cry 4 is a great example of a game that knows what it needs to be and does its job well. Although it doesn’t think too far outside of the proverbial box that is the first-person shooter genre, or the one labeled ‘Sandbox Action,’ it never needed to in the first place. By simply adding to, enhancing and working around its series’ well-liked formula, the game delivers something exceptional.

Before now, only our wildest, testosterone-fuelled dreams could contain the awesomeness that is riding an elephant while touting a grenade launcher. Now, it’s something that we can do whenever we’d like, within Far Cry 4’s mountainous region of Kyrat. Hell, why stop there? If you want to jump off of a high cliff side and soar through the air like a bird, you can do that too. Or, how about taking a taped together, one person helicopter for a spin with a grenade launcher in hand? That’s an option as well.

There’s seemingly no end to the greatness that Far Cry 4 presents. On one hand, it’s an excellent first-person shooter with well above-average mechanics and lots of available weapons. Then, on the other hand, it’s a master class sandbox game, where you can explore to your heart’s content while completing a plethora of different mission types. Both designs are intermingle very well, and the result is a game that deserves recognition as one of the best of 2014.

We’ll see you in Kyrat, if you dare! Just make sure to pack some tiger repellant before coming to visit, because you’ll be in for a sharp surprise if you fail to do so.
