10 Actors Who Could Play Cable In The Deadpool Sequel

Those involved with the Deadpool movie have been teasing an appearance from Cable for a while now, but the Merc with a Mouth himself confirmed that the fan-favourite character will be making an appearance in the sequel during his after-credits scene (where he also hilariously mentioned Dolph Lundgren and Keira Knightley as possible candidates to play the role). The son of Cyclops and Jean Grey, Cable, aka Nathan Summers was sent into the future as a baby after being infected with a techo-organic virus which gave him a bionic arm as it spread across his body and slowly started killing him, though he still has a wealth of other powers - including telepathic and telekinetic abilities) and enjoys wielding some pretty massive futuristic guns! While he's embarked on many a mission with the X-Men and X-Force over the years, it was only when he shared a series with Deadpool that the character really became a fan-favourite. You can understand then why so many fans want this badass superhero to finally make his big screen debut alongside the Merc with a Mouth, but that leaves us with the question of which actor would be best suited to the role. They need to be in the 40 - 60 range, ideally, and capable of portraying this bad ass mutant in a convincing manner. So, which of Hollywood's older talent would make good candidates? Read on to find out... 10) Michael Rooker Michael Rooker may already be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but if his contract will allow it, an appearance as Cable in the Deadpool sequel would be a lot of fun. For starters, we'd be seeing him play against type (Nathan Summers is far from the redneck type characters Rooker has played in The Walking Dead and Guardians of the Galaxy), while the fact that he's also very funny would definitely be a bonus. Of course, Cable is likely going to be taking on a Colossus-like role as the straight man to Ryan Reynolds' wacky Wade Wilson, but if the studio is keen on someone who also has some solid comedic timing, then Rooker definitely fits the bill. 9) Liam Neeson Wade at one point makes some very funny remarks about Liam Neeson and the Taken movies in Deadpool, but while he may have been the butt of the joke there, there's no denying that the actor has what it takes to play a character like Cable. Seeing as he's starred in so many action movies in recent years, it's genuinely surprising that Neeson hasn't set his sights on a superhero film just yet, and this franchise is perhaps the best possible place for him to show off his very particular set of skills. The fact that Neeson's deadpan style of humour is absolutely hilarious (see his appearance in Life's Too Short for proof of that) could also be a bonus in regards to spicing up Cable a little. 8) Mel Gibson Deadpool may have joked about casting Mel Gibson in the movie's after-credits scene, but the controversial actor would actually be a pretty good choice for the role of Cable if you think about it. In recent years, Gibson has been trying to repair his image with appearances in various action movies, though it's teaming up with the Merc with the Mouth which would perhaps be most beneficial to him. Not to mention, the thought of him verbally sparring with Reynolds is definitely appealing. He also without a doubt has the right look for the character, and Gibson's history with franchises like Mad Max and The Expendables prove that he's more than capable of kicking ass in a convincing manner on the big screen. It's unlikely that the studio would take a risk like this in the casting, but we certainly wouldn't be opposed to seeing it happen. 7) Sean Bean Sean Bean isn't the pickiest of actors when it comes to the movies he stars in (see: Jupiter Ascending), but when he makes a good choice (see: The Martian), he's always great to watch. However, he too has yet to delve into a superhero role of any sort, and while the time for him to play a Batman or Captain America type hero may have passed, Bean fully fits the bill when it comes to the older and rugged mutant Cable. We've seen the actor play so many stoic characters that it's pretty easy to picture what he could bring to this role, and the Merc with the Mouth breaking the fourth wall to address how many movies Bean has famously died in would be make for some great comedy. 6) Liev Schreiber Yes, he's already played Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but if Reynolds could come back in Deadpool as a totally different version of his character, would it really be a big deal for the Ray Donovan star to take on the role of Cable? Plus, let's face it, there would be a lot of fourth wall breaking fun to be had with Wade mentioning the fact that Cable looks mighty familiar. Regardless, Schreiber was wasted in Wolverine and deserves a much bigger and more satisfying role in a comic book movie. As Cable, he could really show off what a badass he is, and he also has the right gruff demeanour to absolutely nail this character. 5) Ray Stevenson As Volstagg, Ray Stevenson is being wasted in the Thor movies. After the tremendous job he did as Frank Castle in Punisher: Warzone, many fans hoped he would one day get chance to reprise tat role, but Cable would be even better. At this point in his career, playing bad ass tough guys has become pretty much second nature for the British actor, and the Deadpool sequel is a comic book movie he would actually get a chance to show that off in, unlike the snippets we've seen of him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Frequently cast in villainous roles, seeing Stevenson move away from that to play a noble but still tough as nails hero like Cable would be a fun change of pace. 4) Russell Crowe Deadpool has an undeniably great cast, but drafting in a big name actor for the sequel would be no bad thing. In that respect, Russell Crowe would be perfect, especially as he's unlikely to be needed back as Jor-El in the DC Films Universe any time soon. If Crowe was open to starring in the CGI heavy Man of Steel, a more practical action role like this would surely appeal to him, and getting to see the actor take on such a different type of character as the rough around the edges and battle scarred Cable has a ton of potential. Bringing some much needed weight to the role, Crowe would be an unexpected co-star for Reynolds, but that's exactly what makes this idea so exciting. 3) Woody Harrelson Of all the actors listed here, True Detective star Woody Harrelson has perhaps the best chance of getting a call from Fox. After all, he's shown off some serious dramatic chops in recent years and his profile has increased greatly after starring in The Hunger Games movies. Throw in the fact that he was in Zombieland (written by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick), and he has to be in with a good chance of landing the role. Also, the fact that he could easily switch between being very serious and playing for laughs is a definite advantage. Just give him a wig and he'll look perfect! 2) Kurt Russell Kurt Russell is a fantastic actor who has made one hell of a mark in recent years in the likes of Fast 7, Bone Tomahawk, and The Hateful Eight. It's both a blessing and a curse then that it looks like he'll end up playing Star-Lord's father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, because he would certainly make an awesome Cable. The gruff persona we've seen from him in movies such as the ones listed above fit the character to a tee, and just like it was fun to watch Reynolds bounce off Jeff Bridges in R.I.P.D., so too would it be a great laugh for him to get together with the Merc with a Mouth as Cable in this sequel. If his MCU appearance is just a one time thing, here's hoping Fox make it happen. 1) Jon Hamm Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has already named Mad Men star Jon Hamm as his top choice to play Cable, and if those making the movie noticed the positive reaction to that online, you have to believe Fox will at least offer him the role. That would be a smart move on their part, and with Hamm delving into very different genres by starring in the likes of Black Mirror and Sucker Punch, he'd no doubt be open to Deadpool 2. He's a pretty perfect fit for the character as well; Hamm 100% has the look down and is a fantastic actor who you just know would elevate Cable into being more than just another stereotypical grizzled hero. As a result, he should most definitely be considered.
