10 Actresses Who Could Play Batgirl In The DCEU

Warner Brothers' DC Extended Universe just keeps on growing. After only recently announcing that a movie starring Nightwing is on its way, we now know that another of Batman's sidekicks is to feature in their own film. This time, it's Batgirl AKA Barbara Gordon. While this is exciting enough news on its own, what's really got people talking is the fact that Joss Whedon is currently in talks to direct the movie. If this goes ahead, it'll be one heck of a coup for DC, seeing as Whedon previously led Marvel to massive success with his two Avengers movies.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, probably best known for her parts in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and 10 Cloverfield Lane, has been in the running for several comic book movie roles in the past but hasn’t yet managed to nab one. Namely, Sharon Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers and she was even on the shortlist to play Domino in Deadpool 2. Isn’t about time she got a superhero to call her own, then?

Winstead is an incredibly gifted and versatile actress and could definitely nail Bab’s quirky attitude and sense of humour as well as her PTSD. At 33, it has to be said that Winstead doesn’t quite fit with the youth of The New 52 Batgirl, but the movies could easily adjust the character’s age. She still looks younger than her years, too, so could easily play Babs in, say, her mid-twenties.

Zoe Kravitz

28-year-old Zoe Kravitz’s star is definitely on the rise at the moment. Superhero fans might know her for her role as mutant Angel Salvadore in 2011’s X-Men: First Class, but since then she’s notched up several other interesting credits in the likes of The Divergent Series and Mad Max: Fury Road. Next up, she’ll portray Leta Lestrange, Newt Scamander’s lost love interest, in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them films. It’s just a matter of time now before the actress finds her own leading role, then.

Interestingly, Kravitz has history with the Batman franchise. She previously made headlines by announcing that she’d been refused a role in 2011’s The Dark Knight Rises for being “too urban.” Giving the actress the part of the very urban-based Barbara Gordon would be a good way of making up for that slight on Warner Bros.’ part. Plus, she even briefly voiced Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman in The LEGO Batman Movie.
