At long last, the trailer for Avengers 4 has arrived, and it brings with it our very first look at what promises to be the movie event of 2019 and a thrilling, emotional, action-packed grand finale to the first decade or so of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There's much we can gleam about the film from analyzing this trailer a little closer, so let's see what secrets it's hiding. First of all, we can now say that Avengers 4 is officially titled Avengers: Endgame - a perfect moniker for the end of the story we've all been watching unfold ever since Tony Stark first revealed he was Iron Man back in 2008. There's a real somber atmosphere to the trailer for Endgame, too, and it really sells the dark tone that'll follow the tragic climax of Avengers: Infinity War. But will Avengers: Endgame have a happy ending? That's what we're all wondering. Obviously, it's too early to theorize about this just yet, but the trailer gives us a lot of clues about the rest of the film. So, on that note, let's take a closer look and pick out the ten biggest reveals that it gave us. Stark's Lost In Space The first minute or so of the trailer features one continuous scene which sees a lonely, despondent Tony Stark drifting through space. One of the biggest questions fans had following Infinity War was how was Iron Man going to get back to Earth after being left stranded on Titan, following the battle with Thanos. Well, it seems it won't be an easy journey for him. With food and water rations and the air supply running low, Stark uses his ruined Iron Man helmet to record a heartfelt farewell message to his beloved Pepper Potts. The ship he's on is adrift in space and clearly he doesn't think he's going to make it back to Earth. "Part of the journey is the end," Tony says, which feels like Marvel talking to their fans who aren't emotionally ready for the current Avengers line-up to go. So, what happens next to Stark? Unfortunately, we don't know, as the rest of the trailer keeps up the uncertainty about his fate by never showing us Tony reuniting with the rest of the surviving Avengers. But he will, right? Right? Thanos Is Still On Titan 2 After the Marvel Studios logo turns to dust (like fan-made trailers have been predicting would happen for months), the preview resumes with a shot of Thanos' armor still hanging up where we last saw it in an alien wheat field, like a scarecrow, abandoned and unneeded by its retired owner. We don't get to see Thanos fully, but we see a fraction of his hulking purple form treading through the field, his hands brushing against the flowers. This is exactly where we left him at the end of Avengers: Infinity War - disappearing off to a rural world somewhere to reflect on the "good job" he'd done in achieving his goal of bringing balance to the universe. We weren't sure what was going to happen next for Thanos in Avengers 4, but it looks like we can now confirm that he'll remain on Titan 2 - the name that the Russo brothers have given the planet - at least at the start of the movie. The lack of a full shot of the villain also gives the impression that he's really not a major part of the film and it's mostly about the fallout of his previous actions. The Decimation's Effects Obviously, the big talking point of Avengers: Infinity War was Thanos' snap, how exactly it worked and exactly what it had done. Fans have theorized about that incessantly ever since and the Russos and writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus have clarified bits and pieces but the Avengers: Endgame trailer properly explains the outcome of the event. Black Widow tells the rest of the team - we see Steve Rogers and Bruce Banner, but there might be others present - that "Thanos did exactly what he said he was gonna do. He wiped out 50% of all living creatures." This confirms that it was not just sentient beings that were turned to dust but all forms of animal life as well all across the universe. If you're wondering what to call the finger snap, by the way, fans have been referring to the event as the Snappening for months but a recent MCU tie-in novel officially titled it "The Decimation." We're not sure as yet if this detail will recur in Endgame or not as the term wasn't mentioned directly in the trailer, but I guess we'll soon find out. R.I.P. Shuri In this same scene, as Black Widow's explaining the full effects of the Decimation, digital read-outs of the damage in front of Steve and Bruce show some familiar faces, those who are believed to be among the victims of the massacre. First off, the face of Scott Lang is seen. Anyone who's watched Ant-Man and the Wasp knows that Scott wasn't affected by the Decimation but the Pyms were, leaving him stranded in the Quantum Realm. Naturally, it's been assumed that he was turned to dust with the others. Next up is Peter Parker. Sadly, Spider-Man was killed by Thanos' snap, dying in Tony's arms on Titan. It's interesting that the Earth-based Avengers know this, however, as - as far as we know - Iron Man has yet to return home by this point. Perhaps it's the same case as Ant-Man: he's missing so assumed deceased. Finally, the third character we see will come as a real shock: it's Shuri, princess of Wakanda and Black Panther's genius little sister. We didn't find out what happened to Shuri in Infinity War but many had assumed that, with her brother T'Challa also being killed in the event, she would take over as the new monarch of the country. And perhaps also as the new Black Panther. However, that appears to not be the case. Thor And Nebula Mourn Their Losses Next up, Steve Rogers begins a moving speech as we get a glimpse of how a few of the survivors are holding up following the Decimation. Note that Cap's words neatly apply to who's on screen at that point. "We lost, all of us," he begins, as Thor appears. You could say that the God of Thunder has lost all of his people, as Thanos wiped out half of the Asgardians in Infinity War, many of whom have also probably died following the Decimation. What with losing his homeworld in Thor: Ragnarok, no wonder he's looking so glum in this clip we see of him, having swapped his armor for some everyday Earth clothes. Steve continues by saying, "we lost friends." This plays over a clip of Nebula alone on what looks to be the Guardians' spaceship, as she touches some clothing that presumably belonged to her fallen sister Gamora. When we last saw Nebula, she was the only other person left alive on Titan with Tony. It's unknown why they didn't leave the planet together, but then again, she's never been the most compassionate of people, so maybe she deliberately left him there. Ronin's Reveal Avengers: Infinity War featured just about every hero from the past ten years of the franchise, but - apart from Ant-Man, of course - there was one big exception: Hawkeye. We had one measly line explaining that Clint Barton remained under house arrest following the battle over the Sokovia Accords. Aside from that, though, he wasn't seen or discussed at all. At last, the Endgame trailer reveals the return of Barton, but he ain't Hawkeye no more. As we've known for a while, thanks to set pics, Clint has got himself a new mohawk haircut and a new darker look. In other words, he's taken on the mantle of his alternate alter ego from the comics, Ronin. The trailer features a moment when Natasha sees Clint for the first time since the event, and he looks mighty angry. The reason why is likely revealed in Steve's voiceover: "we lost family," he says. Rumors have stated that Clint will lose his wife and kids to the Decimation. Going by the fact that the retired Avenger is back in action and has got himself an emo makeover, it looks like this tragedy is true. "This Is The Fight Of Our Lives" Cap's speech ends with the rousing words: "This is the fight of our lives." The next clip then finds Steve with Natasha on a quinjet. Apparently, they're on the cusp of diving into some big move to correct what's happened. "This is going to work, Steve," Black Widow assures him. A tired-looking Steve replies: "I know it is. Cos I don't know what I'm gonna do if it doesn't." This is a hugely ominous scene, given that we all expect Chris Evans to hang up his shield for good after Endgame. And from his voiceover and this line, it seems like Captain Rogers is really going to give this battle his all, in order to presumably reverse what Thanos has done to the universe. Also of note is the fact that this scene opens with Steve looking at his compass, with an old picture of Peggy Carter inside. This is a neat callback to Captain America: The First Avenger, bringing Cap's journey full circle. But it could also be setting up a widely-theorized ending for the character: that he'll travel back in time and return to the 1940s to be with Peggy. And The Title Is... Endgame! Yes, the biggest reveal from the Avengers: Endgame trailer is that it's called Avengers: Endgame. Marvel has kept a tight hold on what the fourth Avengers movie would be titled for months now, so the big draw of this trailer - you know, apart from actually getting a look at the film - was finding out its name. And now that we know, it comes as something of a surprise. For the past couple of months, we'd been led to believe that the title was Avengers: Annihilation and had been called that throughout the movie's production. Some fans were dubious of this, however, as Annihilation is a completely unrelated comic book arc and it would make more sense for that name to be saved for later. Congrats to those fans, as you've been proven right. As have those early rumors that the movie would be titled Avengers: Endgame. We were told that the title had been referenced in Infinity War, so many jumped on Doctor Strange's line "we're in the endgame now." This theory was cast away, though, when reports told us that this wasn't the title. We're now wondering whether Marvel themselves spread this false info to throw us off the scent. Ant-Man Returns After the big reveal of the title, the Avengers: Endgame trailer closes on a lighter note that helps add a bit of comic relief after the heavy-going past two minutes. But it also drops a pretty big revelation of its own: Ant-Man comes back! In what could follow on from the scene featured earlier in the trailer, when Black Widow explains about the Decimation, Steve and Nat watch with slack jaws as Scott Lang appears at the front door of the Avengers facility. While he babbles away over the high-tech intercom, fearing that they've forgotten who he is, the pair wonder how it's possible that he could still be alive. As previously stated, he's alive because he's been trapped in the Quantum Ream - but what we want to know is how he got out of there. All the theories about Scott's return tied into those ideas that Avengers: Endgame would open many years after the events of IW, which have clearly been proven false. It seems that it doesn't actually take Ant-Man too long to escape from the other dimension and get back to full size. Presumably, his return is what kicks off the plan that Steve and Nat are about to enact in the previous scene: they'll use the Quantum Realm to dive into the past to reclaim the Infinity Stones. Unless that common theory's wrong, too.
