8 Disturbing Details You Never Realized About Disney Movies

Disney movies have a reputation for taking questionable fairy tales, novels or real-life events and "Disneyfying" them - i.e. cutting out all the darkness to make them palatable for kids. While that's mostly true, you'd be surprised how many alarmingly disturbing things there are hidden in the movies of the House of Mouse. Often, the filmmakers will hide something within their family films that, if you pick up on it, will give the whole thing a much grimmer edge.

The Beast Killed His Servants

Nope, we’re not going to discuss the old “Stockholm Syndrome” chestnut – there’s actually another dodgy detail that will make you think about this tale as old as time very differently.

One of the most memorable and creative aspects of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is the idea that all the Beast’s staff were transformed into household knickknacks. Everyone loves Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts and the gang and it’s a triumphant moment when they’re all restored to humanity by the film’s end, right?

Though it’s never drawn attention to, it seems that not all of the servants made it out of the curse in tact. Remember the west wing of the castle in which the Beast resides? In fits of rage, he’s destroyed practically everything in his room, leaving broken crockery, mirrors and whatnot strewn across the floor.

So, were these items alive? Did the Beast kill his own servants? It’s the only option, considering literally everything in the rest of the house has some kind of life. We even see a destroyed wardrobe. What if this was the partner of Belle’s chirpy wardrobe pal? Is she going to return to human form to discover she’s a widow?

Think about that next time you’re humming along to “Be Our Guest.”
