10 Extremely Underrated Animated Comic Book Movies

While the fanboys battle it out on Facebook and Twitter about which cinematic universe is better, there's a whole bunch of animated comic book movies waiting around to be watched. Sure, some of them, such as Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, have garnered critical acclaim and legendary status, but many have also gone under the radar in a quiet fashion. I'm willing to bet that there's more than a handful that you've probably never even heard about.

Asterix And Obelix: Mansion Of The Gods (2014)

Recommended Videos

What? Did you think this was all going to be about Marvel and DC? Based on the 17th volume of the Asterix comic book series, this film is the famous Gaul’s first venture into the computer-animated world. Simultaneously, it’s also one of the best adaptations of the characters created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo.

In this story, the sneaky Caesar and the Romans plan to defeat the Gauls by building an estate right next to their village. Hilarity ensues, as it’s left up to Asterix and Obelix to save their brethren from becoming yuppies or subservient to the Romans.

While it’s obvious to see the film has been dubbed into English from French, you can’t take anything away from the animators and writers, who pulled off a sterling effort here. This may just be one of Asterix’s finest outings in film yet.

Green Lantern: First Flight (2009)

I bet Ryan Reynolds wishes he’d starred in Green Lantern: First Flight rather than the 2011 film. It’s actually difficult to fathom how the studio didn’t just make a live-screen adaptation of this story, rather than the CGI cringe-fest it produced.

Naturally, after Green Lantern bombed at the box office, the character took a bit of a hit and most people forgot this animated origin story actually existed. It’s a shame, really, because it’s a decent film that introduces us to the Corps and eases us into the often-complex Green Lantern mythos.

Hal Jordan hasn’t had the best of luck in his live-action ventures so far, but his animated ones have been the complete opposite. Green Lantern: First Flight is a must-watch for any fan of the ring-wielding hero.
