10 Live-Action Characters That Look Nothing Like Their Comic Book Counterparts

Knock, knock. Who's there? Comic book. Comic book who? Comic book character that looks nothing like his source material. Haha! Fine. It's a super lame joke, but there's a lot of truth in it. While we're blessed with an endless plethora of comic book characters on the big and small screen, there's also a fair amount of them that look nothing like they're supposed to. In fact, if it weren't for the name, we'd probably not recognize them at all. In some cases, the changes have actually been beneficial to the characters and improved their appearances (i.e. the black costumes in the original X-Men). While others have only solidified what we've strongly suspected about Hollywood: no one understands the source material, nor do they care. Without further ado, we've done some digging and identified 10 live-action characters that look nothing like their comic book counterparts. Before we begin, though, here are a few dishonorable mentions: Scarlet Witch (MCU) Bane (The Dark Knight Rises) Enchantress (Suicide Squad) Doctor Doom (Fantastic Four) Galactus (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) Green Arrow (Arrow) Over time, we've seen Oliver Queen's superhero outfit come to resemble his comic book counterpart's on Arrow. The green of his jacket has become brighter and the face mask is looking much classier than the five-dollar-hooker eye shadow from season 1. His costume isn't all that bad when you consider some of the others on this show, which we'll discuss later on. Gear aside, though, Stephen Amell looks nothing like the Emerald Archer, who's extremely blonde and boasts the coolest goatee in the world. While Amell did sport the classic facial hair in one episode of Legends of Tomorrow, he still looks more like the long-lost sixth member of the Backstreet Boys than a superhero. But you know who does look like Green Arrow? Charlie Hunnam. Since he's down with the idea of playing Ollie in the DCEU now, let's make it happen, Geoff Johns. Hawkeye (MCU) In fairness, it's easy to see why the filmmakers avoided Hawkeye's traditional getup in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's probably the same reason why Fox ignored Wolverine's yellow-and-black garb as well. Let's be honest, it would look far too silly on the big screen. Still, it would've been fun to see Hawkeye's colorful costume brought to life next to Cap's red, blue and white, Iron Man's red and yellow, and the Hulk's green and, um, dark green? Marvel's favorite archer is a comic book character, for Galactus' sake, so let him shine in all his eccentricity and questionable color coded clothing. Come to think of it, if Joel Schumacher had helmed The Avengers, Clint Barton would've definitely been in his original suit and mask. And probably covered in latex with protruding nipples. Definitely nipples, though. Rhino (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) While Aleksei Sytsevich had the smallest of roles in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, his first live-action appearance mirrored the rest of the film: a steamy, hot pile of donkey turd. Even with the terrific Paul Giamatti in the role, Sony managed to cock this one up as badly as Venom in Spider-Man 3. Sheesh, when Rhino makes Jamie Foxx's Electro look good, it says something. For one, could anyone tell that his battle suit resembled a rhinoceros? It looked more like the bastard lovechild of Megatron and Soundwave after one night in Bangkok. It's understandable that Sony might've wanted a different approach to the character, but surely they could've at least given him a better robotic suit than the prop leftovers from 1986's Short Circuit? Maybe the whole concept of Rhino in a live-action movie is a bad idea in the first place. The character's not just stupid in appearance, but he's also a weak villain that belongs in the dumpster along with the likes of Condiment Man, Toad, and Ryback. Do we really need more terrible bad guys in Spider-Man films? Black Canary (Arrow) Another Arrow costume strikes again! When you consider what Black Canary's meant to look like and what the show did to her, you'll see it's quite a departure from the source material. Well, at least they got the blonde wig part right, so that's something to celebrate. Mind you, this costume change is likely due to the fact that most people would rage if Laurel wore the fishnets and skimpy getup from the Green Arrow series. Along with Power Girl and Starfire, Canary is one of those characters whose costume causes a lot of debate about sexism and objectification in comic books. It's understandable, so let's give this one a pass here for doing the right thing. You know, now that we think of it, Arrow's Black Canary looks more like Black Cat than anyone else. Maybe someone in the costume department got confused and when it was finally time for filming, they thought no one would spot the difference. That would explain a lot of Arrow's decisions. Helmut Zemo (Captain America: Civil War) Sometimes, you have to wonder if directors even love comic book characters, especially in their treatment of classic looks. The Russo brothers did so much right with Captain America: Civil War, yet their portrayal of Helmut Zemo left a lot to be desired. Cap's a colorful character, with a bunch of even more colorful foes. We'd already seen a picture-perfect Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger, so why did Zemo turn out looking like Mark Zuckerberg's social media nemesis? Crazy decision, we tell you. No fault can be placed at Daniel Brühl's door, though. He did the best he could with a character that obviously wasn't that important to the film or the filmmakers. Heck, I wonder if the wardrobe team just told Brühl to dress in whatever he had in his closet at home. Yeah, come to think of it, that's probably what happened here. Catwoman (Catwoman) Meow! Apart from the film being one of the greatest train wrecks in cinema history, Halle Berry's Catwoman outfit proved to be just as awful. Obviously, we all missed the memo where the heroine was meant to look like a bad cosplayer trying to look sexy. Maybe because this - let's call it Catshitwoman from here on out - is Patience Phillips and not Selina Kyle, she's a low-budget hero who needs to borrow rags from the homeless to make her costume. This is pure speculation, though, so please, no quoting this as the truth in future articles. But seriously, it's the only thing that makes sense here. The world would've been a better place if we'd never received this Catshitwoman film. The story sucked, the production was even worse, and the outfits still give us nightmares 13 years after its initial release. The Cat is dead. Bury it. Deadshot (Arrow) Say what you will about Suicide Squad, but the garments and make-up were on point. Even the Academy Awards thought so. Will Smith's Deadshot, in particular, looked amazing and you'd find few comic book fans complaining about his overall appearance in the film. Michael Rowe's Deadshot on Arrow, though, is another story. Take nothing away from the actor since this was out of his hands, but his getup was pure trash on the show. First off, he wore an eye patch on the show after Ollie took out one of his eyes, absolutely confirming that the producers mixed him up with Deathstroke. Then, he donned a laser eye patch and became the real Cyclops afterwards. Seriously, we're not making any of this up; it happened. Sure, the TV's show budget is smaller than a big blockbuster's, but here's a suggestion: if the producers stopped screwing around with the locations for all the flashbacks, they'd maybe have a few more pennies to put towards better outfits. Bullseye (Daredevil) Shoot me, but I actually liked Bullseye's look in 2003's Daredevil. When you think of his comic book attire, it's easy to confuse him with other villains and there's nothing distinct about it. Honestly, can you tell the difference between him and Black Bolt? Here, he at least offered something fresh in an otherwise dull flick. Okay, the bullseye on his head might've been a bit too on the nose for our liking, but his street thug couture straight out of a gangster movie perfectly suited his role as one of Kingpin's goons. Also, any movie with Colin Farrell is instantly better than one without him. All in all, it could've turned out a lot worse for Bullseye. He could've been an edgelord with a metal grill and a 'damaged' tattoo on his forehead, for example. Now that's, a serious nightmare. Deadpool (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) Oh, boy. This one's a real stinker of note. Not only did the filmmakers decide to stitch Deadpool's mouth shut, but they decided to insert blades into his arms and give him Cyclop's optic blasts . In another case of obvious mistaken identity, Wade Wilson turned out more like Mortal Kombat's Baraka than the Merc with a Mouth in this film. Yip, production companies must think all popular culture characters look exactly the same, because this happens way too often. Fortunately, we received a more comic book-accurate version of the character in last year's Deadpool, and all seems to be forgiven now. It's the least that Ryan Reynolds deserved after X-Men Origins: Wolverine destroyed his dignity. Iron Fist (Iron Fist) Danny Rand is far from the most popular Marvel character around. In fact, if you had to put a picture of him in a quiz, most people would probably presume he's Yellow & Green Zorro or someone else. That's what made his costume choice in Netflix's Iron Fist even more puzzling to fathom. The color scheme of the original costume is present, but there's nothing Iron Fist about Finn Jones' Danny Rand, except his hand lighting up when he's about to fap. Daredevil's attire developed pretty well throughout the first season and Luke Cage and Jessica Jones looked good, too, so what went wrong here? From what we've seen of The Defenders' promos, it appears as if Danny will avoid donning his comic book costume once again. But hey, maybe the show will surprise us and we'll see him in his traditional getup at some point. Fingers crossed that it happens.
