10 Things In Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice That Don’t Make Any Sense

If you've seen Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, then you'll know that Zack Snyder hasn't made the most coherent film in the world. In fact, his latest is a complete mess in terms of storytelling (as well as in acting, cinematography and dialogue, but let's stick to just logic for now). From start to finish, there are stunning lapses in logic in Dawn of Justice, and holes in the plot so great that you could fly a Kryptonian cruiser straight through them. Suffice to say, the following list of ten things that don't make any sense in the film isn't a definitive one. Batman V Superman is one of the most mistake-ridden movies of the year so far (it'll be a shock if there's another in 2016 that outdoes the picture in that department), so of course there are far more issues to be had with Snyder's movie than those found on this list. All the same, here are ten things in Batman V Superman that make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Obviously, spoilers will follow for those who've yet to catch the film. 10) Why Does The Film Introduce Jimmy Olsen Just To Kill Him Off? Jimmy Olsen is a permanent fixture of Superman movies. In the original films, he was played by Marc McClure, in Superman Returns it was Sam Huntington in the part, and in Batman V Superman it's Michael Cassidy. Hang on a second, though - did you even realize that Jimmy Olsen was in the film? If you're looking for him, go back, watch the movie, then feel free to leave after the first five minutes, because at that point he's already dead. It's a bit of a mystery why Snyder would introduce Olsen as the undercover CIA agent posing as a journalist, only to kill him off right at the start of the film. Perhaps an even bigger question, though, is why Snyder would sneak Olsen in as a secret cameo. He's not even mentioned in the film by name, meaning the only way you would have found out that Olsen was in BvS at all was if you'd stayed through the credits in the vain hope there might be a scene waiting at the end. Which there wasn't. 9) Why Would Anyone Think Superman Was Behind The Opening Shootout? Superman never carries weapons, because he doesn't need them. When your eyes double as lasers and you can topple a skyscraper like it's naught but a giant Jenga tower, you tend not to. So it's problematic that, in the opening sequence set in the African state of Nairomi (never heard of it? That's probably because it's completely made up), there's a bloody shootout that for some reason is pinned on Superman. Of course Supes had nothing to do with the Nairomi massacre, but that he showed up there - in order to save Lois Lane from getting killed - has people back in Metropolis suspicious. But why? Superman doesn't kill (humans; Kryptonians are fair game), and even if he did, he wouldn't need poxy Earth weapons to carry out the act of murder for him. That nobody even asks who was really responsible for the attack smacks of lazy writing. 8) Why Would Anyone Think Superman Caused The Courtroom Explosion? This is another thing that happens in the film simply because it needs to happen, which the writers made happen without first finding a good reason to justify it happening. Batman V Superman needs to find another reason after the Nairomi incident for society to turn against Superman, so at the midway point Scoot McNairy's angry anti-Superman campaigner blows up a courtroom with Kal El in it, killing civilians in the process. Metropolis in its shock wonders why Superman was the only survivor (coincidence?? No - he can survive literally anything), and The Daily Planet runs with the idea that even if Superman didn't cause the explosion itself, he may have been an accomplice. But why would Superman take a break from helping people to blow up a room full of them, and at his own hearing no less? Why would he be the culprit and not, say, the guy that was also in the room who had a well-publicized hatred of Superman? 7) How Does Nobody Realize Clark Kent Is Superman? This argument has been made for as long as Superman has been in existence. Only it seems more pressing now than ever. And that's not just because it's even harder to disguise someone of Henry Cavill's bulk behind a pair of specs than it was to conceal secret Supermen of old. The issue in Batman V Superman is that Superman lives in a more grounded and gritty world than before. The idea that Clark Kent and Superman could exist side-by-side, looking for all intents and purposes exactly the same without anyone realizing, worked in a more innocent time. But Batman V Superman, and this new DC Cinematic Universe, is meant to take place in somewhere that vaguely resembles our world. You can't have the 'realism' and still also convince audiences that Kal-El hides as Clark Kent simply by slipping on a sweater and press badge. 6) What Is The Flash's Appearance In Bruce Wayne's Dream All About? You will have caught The Flash, as played by Ezra Miller, in Batman V Superman neutralizing a would-be convenience store burglar, as seen in the brief CCTV footage that Bruce Wayne watches in his apartment (courtesy of Lex Luthor's 'metahumans' research file). What you might not have noticed is The Flash also puts in an appearance in one of Bruce's dreams, giving the Caped Crusader a warning. According to Future Flash, Superman is going to bring about the apocalypse, and the only way Bruce can stop that is by getting to Lois Lane first. Of course, there are many, many questions posed here. For one, how did The Flash infiltrate Bruce Wayne's dreams? Or, if Bruce is just imagining it, how does his subconscious know about Lois Lane's connection with Superman/Clark Kent? It's doubly baffling when The Flash and his powers in this universe haven't even been established yet. 5) How Does Lex Luthor Know How Krypton Technology Works? Lex Luthor is a genius. We know this because he's played by the guy who pretended to be Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, and because he constantly talks about things you couldn't possibly understand in a really condescending manner. Is Lex Luthor such a genius, though, that he'd be able to make his way into a downed Kryptonian craft and immediately start making things happen? Things that only native Kryptonian experts would know how to do? Once inside the cruiser, Lex immediately gets to work. He manipulates the system so it works exclusively at his command, then follows that up with some gentle Kryptonian/human gene splicing, which results in crappy CGI troll-beast Doomsday being birthed into the world. It's not like there are manuals for this stuff, so how exactly does Lex know what he's doing? Even relatively basic Earth technology requires a bit of training in advance. 4) How Come Superman Hears Lois In Danger But Not His Mother? It's late in the game, and in a bid to get Superman to fight Batman, Lex Luthor takes Martha Kent hostage, vowing not to let her go until Superman first destroys Batman. Superman duly obliges, confronting Batman in the hope that the man in black might help him find his kidnapped mother. Long story short, Supes gets into a tussle with the Gotham knight in the process, ending in the two battered, but with their rivalry resolved. All's well that end's well - except none of it needed to happen in the first place. Throughout Batman V Superman, we see Superman flying to the aid of Lois Lane whenever she's in danger. He's an all-knowing, all-sensing super-being - of course he can hear that she's in trouble all the way over in Africa. Here's a question though: how come Superman can hear when Lois is in danger from thousands of miles away, but can't locate his mother when she's tied up somewhere in the same city? 3) Why Would Anyone Think A Nuclear Strike Above A Major City Is Safe? Nukes. They can do major damage, but as long as you detonate them safely a couple of miles away, there's absolutely no chance of problems for those on the ground. That's nonsense of course, but in Batman V Superman this is inexplicably apparently accepted logic. As Superman and Doomsday battle in the sky above Metropolis, it takes the American government all of half a minute to decide that exploding a nuclear device over the city is the right thing to do. The explosion's close enough that the people of Metropolis can see it (the flash of which would very likely blind them, FYI), and large enough that the shockwave at the least would be felt down on the ground. The most dangerous consequence, though, would be nuclear fallout: Metropolis may be out of immediate harm's way, but thanks to gravity the city would be due a shower of radioactive fallout that would turn it into America's Chernobyl. 2) Why Doesn't Superman Throw The Spear At Doomsday? Superman doesn't need to 'die' at the end of Batman V Superman. (That in itself raises another question: why kill Superman off at all if you're only going to suggest he's still alive just minutes later, and also when we know Henry Cavill is contracted to return in future movies? Even plot- and franchise-wise it doesn't make sense for him to be killed.) Know why? Because spears don't need to be administered - they only need to be thrown. That's why they're spears. For some unknown reason, Superman thinks the only way to take down Doomsday at the end of BvS is to fly the Kryptonite-tipped spear into the creature, sacrificing himself in the process. Obviously, he doesn't need to do this at all. Spears were developed so they could be lobbed. Superman appears to have gotten confused, though, believing that the thrower has to go with the projectile in order for it to work. Maybe this is why Superman never uses weapons. 1) Why Do Batman And Superman Fight In The First Place? You'd have thought that the brains behind the film would have nailed this quite fundamental question, considering it's the basis for both plot and title. And sure, Zack Snyder and his writers make a good go of explaining why Batman comes to fight Superman late in the movie. Ultimately, though, it doesn't really add up. Batman hates Superman because he doesn't trust him, Superman confronts Batman so he can save his mother, but...why? We know Bruce Wayne is a smart guy, so that he'd believe Superman is dangerous solely based on some dubious media reporting doesn't ring true. Neither does the fact that he'd want to straight-up kill Superman based on said dodgy reporting. Superman, on the other hand, doesn't need to face Batman at all, as we've already established, but why exactly did he confront Batman to ask him for assistance in the first place? He has no idea that the person under that cowl has the technology to locate Martha Kent.
