This argument has been made for as long as Superman has been in existence. Only it seems more pressing now than ever. And that’s not just because it’s even harder to disguise someone of Henry Cavill’s bulk behind a pair of specs than it was to conceal secret Supermen of old. The issue in Batman V Superman is that Superman lives in a more grounded and gritty world than before.

The idea that Clark Kent and Superman could exist side-by-side, looking for all intents and purposes exactly the same without anyone realizing, worked in a more innocent time. But Batman V Superman, and this new DC Cinematic Universe, is meant to take place in somewhere that vaguely resembles our world. You can’t have the ‘realism’ and still also convince audiences that Kal-El hides as Clark Kent simply by slipping on a sweater and press badge.
