12 Things You Might Have Missed In The Logan Trailer

Despite being one of the most beloved and iconic cinematic superheroes around, Wolverines's two solo movies do not rank among many people's top comic book movies. Both X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine - in particular the former - squandered interesting premises as things devolved into mindless action. With the upcoming third Wolverine movie being Hugh Jackman's last appearance in the role after 17 years, there is a lot of pressure on it to step up to the plate and act as a terrific send-off to the character.

The unlikeliest addition to the cast of Logan is definitely Stephen Merchant. Most known for his collaborations with Ricky Gervais, a comedian like Merchant seemed an odd fit for such a serious, bleak film. Even stranger is the fact that he doesn’t seem to be playing a comic relief role.

Previously, a promotional image made it pretty clear that he was playing Caliban, a mutant with the power to locate other mutants. Curiously, the character just appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse – but played by Tomas Lemarquis instead. We’ve had different actors playing the same parts  in X-Men movies before, of course, but not usually in successive films.

We can guess that it’s Caliban who’s wrapped up to fare the desert in the above shot. Another brief clip shows Merchant’s face, where it appears that the character has been captured by the Reavers and, we can presume, forced to use his abilities to track down Logan and the rest. In that way, he looks to be an unwitting stooge for them rather than a villain himself.
