10) Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man
First up, the trailer follows on from what we saw previously in establishing Peter and Tony’s student/mentor relationship. We also get confirmation of a fact that we’d pretty much already guessed: that Spider-Man will not be welcomed into the Avengers due to his young age and inexperience.
“So, to become an Avenger, are there, like, trials or an interview?” asks Peter.
A dismissive Tony replies, “Do me a favour. Can’t you just be a friendly, neighbourhood Spider-Man?”
The scene is a welcome nod to Spidey’s classic calling card and also sets up where Peter’s character is at the beginning of the film. Alongside this, we see several cool shots of him swinging through the city and accidentally crashing pool parties. At this point, he doesn’t seem to be an active crimefighter, but instead just helping out where he can.
9) “Do You Know Him, Too?”
This new trailer also recaps another reveal that the first one gave us: that Peter will have a confidante in his best friend Ned Leeds, who quickly finds out about his super alter-ego. The opening gives us a better look at Ned’s character and it seems like he’ll be a fun addition to the cast, asking lots of fan-pleasing questions about Spider-Man’s career and his powers.
“Can you summon an army of spiders?” Ned asks Peter, confusing him with Scott Lang’s Ant-Man (or maybe even Christian Bale’s Batman). He also asks what we all would ask if our best friend was Spider-Man: “can I try the suit on?”
Ned’s best bit in the trailer, though, comes in an unexpected cameo from Captain America. While at school, an old Cap fitness video is shown to the class, which prompts Ned to ask Peter: “Do you know him, too?” To which Peter proudly replies: “Stole his shield.”
It’s a hilarious moment on many levels. Not least because it reveals that boring educational movies are livened up with superheroes in the Marvel universe.
