5 Movies To See In October

October is here, fall is in full swing, and most importantly, the main string of weekends with award-contending films has finally begun. Between the excellent horror that comes naturally with Halloween's looming presence and the awards races that are beginning to take form, October is always a great time for movies, and this year doesn't look like it'll be any different.

Most people have been too absorbed talking about Ben Affleck as Batman to leave any time to discuss his upcoming villainous role, but I’ve hardly even been able to think about Batman due to my excitement for Runner Runner. Full disclosure: I’m a huge Affleck fan. I loved him in the ’90s, and even in crummier films, I’ve still enjoyed watching him. We’ve never really had the opportunity to see him play a full-blown villain, at least not the kind who feeds people to alligators, so Runner Runner should be a treat. Judging by the trailers, Affleck seems to pull off the role.

Fuller disclosure: I’m a huge Justin Timberlake fan. I’ve loved him in almost every role he’s been in, and I’m especially a fan of the action chops he showed off throughout In Time. I know people were mixed on the movie, but it had an excellent premise, and Timberlake did just about everything right in the role. I doubt this movie will be quite as action-centric, or involve quite as many 50-year-olds who look like Olivia Wilde, but it still should have some great action for Timberlake to further prove himself with.

I realize this is the film on this list that has the best chance of being negatively recieved by critics, but from the looks of it, it’s the sort of film that’s fun to watch and won’t weigh on you too much afterward. No matter what anyone tells you, going to the movies should be fun, at least some of the time. I know that the early reviews haven’t been that positive, but I’ll still say Runner Runner is as a good of a bet as anything for a fun time at the movies this month.
