5 Movies To See In July

July is upon us and the summer blockbuster season is in full swing, which means there are a ton of great movies hitting theaters. From a monster vs. robots showdown to another beloved superhero seeking his cinematic redemption, this month is going to be yet another where you may wish you could spend all day in the theater. But that isn’t realistic, you likely have a job, and other life commitments besides movies, so you’re faced with the ever so daunting task of deciding which films are worth your time and money this month. In order to help you make up your mind, I’ve put together this list of 5 must-see films releasing over the course of July. There are certainly some other quality films hitting theaters, but these are the 5 that you need to make sure you don’t miss. So without any further ado, read on for our list of 5 movies to see in July. Coffee Town Coffee Town, the first film from the folks over at CollegeHumor, releases in select theaters and through some streaming services this month. CollegeHumor constantly provides some of the best laughs on the internet, and the fact they're moving into films is extremely exciting. For those who've yet to hear, the story follows Will, a man who runs his website out of a coffee shop, freeloading off their fast wi-fi and the $0 rent they can charge him. However, his free ride may be over when the shop is scheduled to be renovated and turned into a bar, so he decides he must do something about it. The logical choice is to break into the place at night in order to discourage any hopes for a nightlife in the neighborhood, but of course things won't go as he planned. It's about time Glenn Howerton leads a comedic feature. He's one of the best minds in comedy, and constantly delivers comedic gold through his performances on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. I see no reason why that won't translate extremely well to this film. This looks like it'll definitely be your best chance for quality laughs this month, so find a way to see it. Pacific Rim The response to the trailers for Pacific Rim has been rather polarized, with some saying the film looks awesome and some saying it looks a bit too Transformersy, but that doesn't change the fact this has been one of my most anticipated films of the year from the start, and I cannot wait for it. Guillermo del Toro is one of the most exciting directors working today, and there's one thing he's more exciting with than anything else: monsters. Needless to say, seeing what he has planned for his monsters vs. robots sci-fi action epic is something you should be very, very excited about. Del Toro has had his ups and his downs lately, but this is a film that he's been working on for a long time and has likely been planning for longer than most of us can imagine. The cast is as awesome as possible, too. Idris Elba has become a huge fan favorite lately, with his name creeping onto almost every dream casting list. This looks like a great role for him and should push him even closer to the A-list. I'm also eager to see Charlie Day in the film. He's one of the best comedic actors on TV, so any chance to see him in a feature film is one you should jump at. From top to bottom this cast is full of great actors, so even if you aren't interested in the story, you'll at least be treated to some solid performances. There's already been serious talks of a sequel too, so it seems like most of the people involved are very confident that this film is actually going to be as good as we hope. All the more reason you should make sure to see it. The Conjuring If you're a horror fan, and even if you aren't, The Conjuring has to be one of your must-see films of July. Really anything James Wan dreams up is an absolute must-see, but the trailers for this film are absolutely terrifying. Seriously, if you haven't seen them yet, you need to go check them out now. In fact, for those of you who prefer not to get nightmares from going to the movies, the trailers may have more scares than you can handle. It's another ghost story from Wan, but this time it deals with some paranormal researchers, one of whom is played by Patrick Wilson, who has shown that he can take on horror roles and still deliver a stellar performance. This year hasn't been a great year for the genre so far. There have been some bright spots, but for the most part the big horror releases have underwhelmed. If early reports hold true, The Conjuring will definitely have a shot at challenging Evil Dead for the scariest horror flick of the year. I'm not sure whether I'm more excited for this or Wan's other film releasing this year, Insidious 2, but just know that Wan is trying his best to become THE name in horror. So far fans are reaping the benefits. Only God Forgives Only God Forgives has received some extremely mixed reviews. From winning the Grand Prize at the Sydney Film Festival to getting booed at Cannes, the jury still seems to be out on whether Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling were able to successfully replicate the magic they made with Drive. It looks like this movie is as hardcore of a twisted revenge story as imaginable. Gosling plays a man who is involved in the underground world of Thai boxing and drug smuggling, but when his brother is killed, his mom wants him to go seek out the men who murdered his brother in order to get their family's revenge. It's another strong, stoic role for Gosling, who has made these types of characters his forte. If you didn't like the lack of dialogue or the extreme violence in Drive, then Only God Forgives may not be your movie either. Word is that there's even less words spoken by Gosling and even more bloody beatings this time around. But for that same reason, I'm going to assume that for fans of Refn and fans of Gosling, this is going to be just as awesome of a viewing experience as their first team-up. It's only having a limited theatrical release though, so you may not be able to see it at your local cinema. That being said, I'd definitely advise driving to the closest city that has it, because this is another film that you don't want to miss. The Wolverine The Wolverine is one of the best comic book characters around. If you want to debate that, then we're going to have some serious problems here. Now, X-Men: Origins may not have been the quality film that fans were hoping for from the character, but that doesn't change the fact that Wolvie still has the potential for an epic solo movie. With the claws in James Mangold's hands, the character can get the movie he deserves in The Wolverine. Samurai steel clashing with adamantium claws and Wolverine facing questions of his own immortality, those two things are very different from what we've seen so far in the X-Men films. The fact this movie is clearly set apart from the rest of the X-Men universe, and the fact that Jackman is comfortable admitting the flaws with Origins, should definitely help this movie far exceed what we've seen so far from the character. The trailers we've been shown so far look awesome, and as much as I enjoyed Man Of Steel, I've been more excited for this superhero movie from the start. Jackman has shown in movie after movie that he's just about perfect as Logan. Now it's time for him to have a script that doesn't cripple his performance (and ruin Deadpool).
