The Marvel universe is something quite special. It's a vibrant, lurid collection of worlds, all swollen with sharp humor, wicked thrills, and gulp-inducing tragedy. Over several decades, Marvel comics have inspired some of the greatest movie superheroes, villains and anti-heroes to zap themselves up onto the big screen - including Spider-Man, Iron Man, X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, and Blade. Hollywood stars have scrambled for the roles in the rubber suits originally written in comic form, and it's a testament to the quality of these creations that the biggest names in film are desperate to jump into their skin. And Marvel isn't done yet - not by a long shot. After announcing the release of X-Men: Apocalypse - the sequel to the unanimously adored Days of Future Past - 20th Century Fox went one further last year and declared Gambit as being in pre-production, with Channing Tatum set to grab the fizzing deck of cards and don the jet-black bowler hat. Taylor Kitsch took on the role of this particular Marvel mutant back in Wolverine's very own Origins flick, but his portrayal was met with a nonplussed reaction from fans who expected a character with a much higher degree of complexity and charisma. The nineties X-Men cartoon show boosted the popularity of this Cajun character, and when his big-screen adaptation in Origins: Wolverine fell completely flat, the outcome for his cinematic future looked bleak. But he's back. The kinetic card-shifter is all set for his very own Origins movie in late 2016, and whilst this has generated mixed feelings within both the Marvel fan and cinephile communities, the prospect of Gambit holding his very own film is undeniably intriguing at the very least. 4) Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Ordinarily, a sequel for the sake of success would hardly be cause for celebration, but given the way in which Guardians of the Galaxy injected such a giddy joy into unsuspecting audiences last year, it's difficult not to get excited about the prospect of a second installment. The original movie offered a plethora of captivating intergalactic characters, and not since Star Wars has there been such a rich platform to build upon to create an utterly mesmerizing cinematic universe. Perhaps the best thing about the first Guardians of the Galaxy was how it astonishingly surpassed expectations. Director James Gunn's resume hardly screamed "guaranteed success"; offering a mixed bag of thrills, chills and chaotic spills that ranged from a good screenplay for the Dawn of the Dead reboot to writing credits for the two disastrous live-action Scooby-Doo movies. But lo and behold did Gunn do right by Guardians, writing and directing the movie and pulling off the most surprising Marvel success of the year. Tipped for a release in early 2017, Gunn has assembled the mouth-watering cast of Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista (who held a curiously compelling screen presence as Dax the Destroyer in the first movie) for the Guardians sequel. The director has admitted that the second film's plot is so "risky" it managed to stun his Marvel bosses when he revealed it to them a short time ago. Whether you believe that's a reason to get excited about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is up to you. Either way, the prospect of seeing this colorful band or characters romp around in space has us waiting around with baited breath. 3) Doctor Strange Unless you're a Marvel aficionado, the name Doctor Strange may sound a little alien to you. This particular comic book caper has been without a big-screen feature to his name until now, but those fans who have been campaigning for him to make an appearance will be happy to see his name up in lights by the time November 2016 rolls around. Whilst Strange has never previously zapped his way into theatres, he did have a brief appearance on the small screen in 1978, with Peter Hooten taking on the titular role. For the big screen adaptation, Benedict Cumberbatch is set to don the MD badge as the arrogant but adroit neurosurgeon who learns the mystic arts. Doctor Strange uses his acquired power to protect planet Earth from supernatural threat, and is all set to take on a variety of challenges in the upcoming adaptation. Director Scott Derrickson's track record (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, Deliver us from Evil) suggests that the film will be receiving a fittingly dark, twisted touch for its portrayal of a flawed, supernatural protagonist, and it'd be a intriguing change to see a broody Marvel movie slapped with a hard "R" certificate for once. Chiwetel Ejofor always brings a strong presence to the screen, and the lead star of 12 Years a Slave is also billed to take a role in this adaptation. There's a long way to go for Doctor Strange, but if everything goes smoothly, it could really be a film to look out for. 2) Ant-Man Paul Rudd - a man who manages to tickle audiences either when he's playing deadpan or flying deliriously over-the-top - is set to take centre stage for the pint-sized protagonist in Ant-Man - and with the exhausting production process that the movie has gone through, a good few laughs are definitely in order. Rudd's character is Scott Lang - a petty crook who becomes a reluctant, miniature hero when an entomologist asks him to become the safeguard for his very own Ant-Man technology. Rudd shed some serious weight for the role, and was forced to contend with a barrage of press questions as the comic book movie was subject to some crazy occurrences. The production process of this Marvel movie has gained notoriety in the Hollywood for the long-winded ordeal it's gone through. With several cast members waltzing off set and director Edgar Wright departing after citing creative differences, Ant-Man has been rewritten, re-cast and rethought more times than any other superhero film in recent memory. Peyton Reed - a director who's almost exclusively puppeteered cornball romantic comedies until now - has taken the mangled reins from Edgar Wright, and with all due respect to Reed, it's difficult not to feel disappointed. Wright is a filmmaker with a natural eye for cinema, with Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End all wildly entertaining from beginning to end. But the beauty of cinema lies in its ability to surprise us, and if Peyton has managed to pull Ant-Man off, it'll be one of the finest achievements in a long time. Good, bad or mediocre, people are simply gasping to see how Ant-Man has turned out. Us included. 1) Deadpool Ryan Reynolds dons the red-and-black rubber for one of the most highly anticipated Marvel movies in years in Deadpool - a long-awaited adaptation of the particularly popular comic book anti-hero. Anyone a little more familiar with the Marvel universe will know that this is not the first time that Reynolds has taken up this role, and those even more intimate with the comic book world will know that his first portrayal of Deadpool was wrong in all kinds of ways. Gloriously nicknamed "Merc with a Mouth," the comic book character of Deadpool separates himself from the herd by frequently breaking the fourth wall, addressing the audience with witty - albeit obnoxious - observations. Yet in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds' character bizarrely has his mouth sewn shut, turning the "Merc with a Mouth" from an audience-winking martial artist to a bastardized, boring shell of a bad guy. In 2016, we're all set for what Deadpool is really all about. Whether the movie will deliver remains to be seen, but the fact that the character is being more closely linked to his comic book roots is a promising sign. Tim Miller is set to make his feature debut as director, and this Marvel release really can't roll around soon enough.
