6 Of The Most Awesome Geek Moments From Comic Book Movies

Half of us who are already comic book fans just go to these movies secretly waiting for geek moments. Those are the moments when a comic book movie drops in an Easter egg or a reference that just make the nerds and fanboys go crazy. While most of us are blissfully aware that comic book movies rarely do the source material justice, the little geek moments that pop up in these films make it well worth it for us geeks. These movies don't need to be perfect re-tellings of the comic book. Just give us a nod and at least let us know that you "get it." The other great thing about "geek moments" is that they are not defined by one moment. Something as simple as the camera panning by a costume on a desk or a symbol on a wall somewhere can do it. Geek moments are unique to each film they are in, and you can often tell which moments are there for the geeks by the weird little squeals that fanboys let out when these scenes happen. Gives it away every damn time. So, on that note, here are 6 awesome geek moments from movies that I thought totally kicked ass. Scott Gets One-Up - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World When it comes to geek moments from comic book movies, very few can surpass just how on-point Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was. Having been a huge fan of the book and having been obsessed with just how awesome it was, I can honestly say that despite a mega-changed ending, this is as solid and true-to-form as comic book movie adaptations come. It was such a perfect film for what it set out to be, and I still cannot understand why some people weren't a fan of it. Though the entire film is littered with spot on depictions of scenes that are great geek out moments for fans of the series, the moment when we see Scott get his extra life (the book and movie were littered with game references, it was hard to pick just one) was totally awesome. It was such an essential scene to depict the growth that Scott had experienced across his adventures. Plus, just seeing a movie character get a ONE-UP, with pixel animations, sound effects, etc., was very geek-tastic. The Comedian's Death - Watchmen People can say whatever they want about this movie, but can we be honest for a second? Zack Snyder pretty much pulled off the impossible here. Yes, most of the political elements were gone, but guess what? Cold war ideals do not sell movies in the 2000's. While much was changed, I actually think that Snyder did a damn good job at adapting the comic, considering how lofty the goal was. And while there may have been some serious changes (do you really think a giant alien squid would have been widely accepted by audiences?), there are some perfectly executed scenes that made the Watchmen fan in us stand up and salute. While Rorschach's arrest and imprisonment scenes could easily be on this list, I really wanted to give some props to the opening scene in the movie. From the color hues and the first person perspective, to the falling out of the window while we focus on the smiling button, the beginning of Watchmen set a tone that was almost impossible for the rest of the film to follow. And that is the problem. The intro was so good and on-point, that the rest of the movie slowly let us down more and more. By the time we reached the conclusion, the good vibes from the start were gone. That said, the beginning did make us geeks glow, because let's face it, that shit was perfect. Nick Fury Reveal - Iron Man Marvel is REALLY good at whetting the appetites of us geeks and nerds. They do not always do the stories the justice they deserve, but they come pretty damn close. One of the ways they win our affection is by knowing that a post-credit sequence can be the final taste you leave in the audiences' mouth before they leave the theater. Therefore, why not leave them with something that will have them drooling all over themselves? While it could be argued that Iron Man is the best of the Marvel movies (yes, I just said that), there are few moments of that film as awesome as the moment we meet Nick Fury. Sam "Motherfucking" Jackson?! REALLY?! I knew Nick Fury was black in the ultimate universe, and thought that was pretty ballsy, but I was not sure how we would see him in the film. So, to see that Nick Fury was FINALLY going to be the badass we always thought he would be was amazing. Also, to know he was talking to Tony Stark with the idea of assembling the Avengers had all of us geeks nerdgasm at once. There were a lot of wet seats when us nerds left the theater after seeing Iron Man, trust me. Robin Teaser - The Dark Knight Rises I was, overall, very disappointed with the final film in Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. Though the first two entries had some issues, they were fun and entertaining. They also did justice to the characters. But the third film just had too many damn plotholes to overlook. Still, there was a very cool Easter egg in there for those of us paying close attention. When they showed the scene of the arena in Gotham collapsing, there's a point where they scan the crowd. If you are not a fan or not familiar with the comics, it might not have even stood out to you, but the R sign that the man is holding in the crowd (see photo above) is the same font used for the R in the Robin comics. Which meant that they were alluding to a Robin character with the inclusion of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Of course, as soon as we get Joseph Gordon-Levitt in what could be one of his most exciting roles yet, they ret-con him and give us Ben Affleck. Fuck you, DC. That is how I am ending this entry. The Merging Of Mutants - X-Men Days Of Future Past Yes, it should be noted that the X-Men films seem to go off the rails really easily. The first three entries are a perfect example of this. They started out awesome and got worse and worse. So. what did the producers do? They rebooted the series by taking us back to the genesis of the whole mutant movement. The reboot was a lot of fun and breathed some nice new blood into the franchise (which, frankly, died in part three). So, when I first heard they would be joining the two casts for a new movie that played off the Days Of Future Past comic book, I geeked out a little. But outside of just theory, what could have been a huge mess really ended up working quite well. They knew which mutants to keep in forefront and which to keep in the background. They introduced some characters for fanboys to go nuts over (Bishop!) and somehow, they made the whole stew taste delicious. Granted, I still don't think it worked as well as the story did in the comics, but what a way to gap the last series that fell off and the new series, which is still just finding itself. Thanos Reveal - The Avengers As an uber-Marvel fanboy for most of my life, I was a big fan of Thanos and the idea of the Infinity Gauntlet as a nerd kid. I also loved the mini-series that focused on Thanos getting the Gauntlet and pretty much laying waste to a good portion of the Marvel universe. I thought it was dark and twisted, and I loved it. But I can honestly and openly admit that I never thought I would see Thanos on screen. Not for a moment. I know we got hints at the Infinity Gauntlet before this post-Avengers credit sequence, but seeing Thanos look towards the camera and smirk was like the cinematic equivalent to, well, use your imagination. It was the perfect way to end the film, all while setting up the next one. While rumor has it that we may not see Thanos until Avengers 3, I don't give a fuck. He is worth the wait. I know the damage that guy does, and if they have the balls to "go there," it could be the best ending to a superhero trilogy, ever. I know my hopes will probably be dashed, but like I ask you dear readers every week, please just let me dream?

Nick Fury Reveal – Iron Man
