The 10 Most Disturbing Movie Scenes Of 2014

I will woefully admit that I am a bit disappointed in the lack of truly disturbing scenes in cinema this year. While I can also admit that it was a good year for movies, it was not a good year for movies that screwed with your head and made you want to vomit everywhere (which I am a fan of, and you must be, too, seeing as to how you are reading this article right now). That doesn't mean 2014 was without its disturbing film moments, as there are still a handful that made me feel like I needed to take a bath, but it just didn't come close to what we saw in 2013. What I am talking about here are the scenes and moments that stay with you and sort of haunt you in their wake. Maybe they show you something you have never seen (or wanted to see) before, maybe they traversed some taboo that most of society would cringe at, or maybe it is just something involving a bodily fluid or organ. Disturbing is a relative word to whoever is experiencing it at the time, and it does mean different things to different people. For me, it's necrophilia, anal probing, watching someone rot away with cancer in a documentary and so on. In other words, genuinely disturbing things. If you couldn't tell already, this is not a list for those with weak stomachs. Also, a quick warning for those blissfully unaware of what they are reading: MASSIVE SPOILERS LIE AHEAD. Blue Ruin - The First Kill Blue Ruin will live on as one of my generation's most hard-boiled, gritty, and intensified portrayals of violent revenge, with all praise aimed at indie filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier, but a disturbing realism makes the film a tad hard to stomach at times. The movie is an absolute winner, entrancing from start to finish in its bleak delivery, but there's something starkly unsettling about the instigating actions of Macon Blair's lead character Dwight. Stalking his victim from the very moment he's released from jail, Dwight knows he must kill the man who wronged his family, but life's unpredictability makes the task a tad more difficult than anticipated, creating on of the most unforgettable cinematic kills of 2014. The way Dwight murders his target avoids any sense of Hollywood flashiness, giving audiences an uncomfortably believable sequence that becomes harder and harder to forget over time. There's no gun, no fancy weapons - just a quick stab to a buff man's head, an eye that immediately turns red, and a growing pool of blood after he falls to the floor. While the above description doesn't sound like anything spectacular, there's a deadly-silent atmosphere that accentuates every puncture wound and cry-out as Dwight finds his revenge in the coldest of blood, staring into the dead, bloodshot eyes looking directly back into his soul. Saulnier captures murder for what it is - seething hatred, miscalculated consequences, and pure, unfiltered horror. ABCs of Death 2 - Z Is For Zygote Zygote (n): a diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes; a fertilized ovum. How much of a mindfuck is ABCs Of Death 2? Well, considering that out of 26 entries, two of them made our list of this year's most disturbing movie moments, I'd say it's a pretty fucked up film. We'll get to "V is for Vacation," a hyper-surreal party-gone-wrong, shortly, but Chris Nash couldn't have ended this psychotic collection of gruesome shorts on a weirder, more revolting note. Nash redefines the phrase "keeping it in the family" here, creating the creepiest of perversions. Please note: SPOILERS ARE ABOUT TO FOLLOW. So, in "Z is for Zygote," a pioneer woman becomes pregnant and she makes a promise not to birth her child until the father returns home after immediately running out. Days turn into months, months into years, and her belly continues to grow with the child inside (yeah, messed up enough). Then, when the child gets big enough, it pushes all of the mother's organs out of her mouth and overtakes the fleshy remains - essentially wearing the mother as a costume. After the spewing of organs, spraying gore everywhere, the father comes home and immediately wants sexy time with his wife - who is now his f#cking child. The End. WHAT THE HELL, CHRIS NASH. FOREVER UNCLEAN! Honeymoon - Alien Slug Pulled From Vagina Honestly, I really liked Honeymoon. I know some people may bitch about how it was slow and plodding, but in horror movies, that is often called "building tension." Yet, for some reason, our ADHD generation seems to always find fault in it. It may also help that I was in a failing relationship with a red head who slowly lost her mind before watching it (which is pretty much the story of the film, summed up minus spoilers), so in that sense, this was a 4D movie for me. Seriously, I felt like I was watching a living scrapbook. But I digress. So, what was so shocking about this film? Well, we know that something is wrong with the character Bea, but we do not know what exactly is going on. We know she is losing her shit, but we do not know why. It all culminates with her on her bed, yanking some tentacle from her vagina. I mean, I think it's a tentacle. What's great about the movie is that it leaves a lot up to the viewer, but there is definitely something very tentacle and alien-like yanked from her vagina in what ends up being a very jarring scene that shows you just how fucked up things have become. Tusk - The Walrus Reveal When Kevin Smith first announced Tusk, we questioned just how far his walrus-torture-porn-kidnapping-caper could push the boundaries. With Justin Long cast as the film's unfortunate victim, could Smith truly transform the mustachioed podcaster into a mammal with gigantic, white tusks? Well, if anyone had the balls to attempt such a twisted transformation, it'd be the fearless Kevin Smith, and much to the delight of the horror fan inside of me, Long's final walrus form delivers on EVERY level, including the lifestyle he so gruesomely adopts. Despite your final feelings on Smith's pseudo-horror flick, one of 2014's crowing achievements came when Long's walrus suit is unveiled for the first time. Sporting stretched-out skin and Frankenstein-like stitching, Long is completely transformed into a physical monster that no longer resembles a biological human form. It's not every day that a director delivers the exact amount of insanity promised, but Long's grotesque mutilation and revolting walrus body are the product of a madcap filmmaker who excitedly jumps at the chance to shock viewers with the obscene and unheard of. What's disturbing isn't the blood, scars, and leathery hide Smith showcases though, but the realization that there's no human resemblance of Long's character left to save - just a squishy, fleshy shape shoved inside a walrus casing like a sausage. Septic Man - First Scene While the entirety of Septic Man could make any year's list of disturbing moments, as it's loaded with an endless barrage of bodily fluids, the very first scene where a sleepy town's disgusting infection is introduced might be the most vile, repugnant, and nauseating collection of images ever put to screen. The film itself takes place in a gigantic septic tank, where actor Jason David Brown finds himself drenched in a mixture of human waste and other unmentionable horrors, yet nothing tops what actress Nicole G. Leier must endure in the film's opening minutes. At least writer Tony Burgess and director Jesse Thomas Cook set expectations early. This way, weaker stomachs only have to waste a few minutes of their time. The specific scene in question captures every possible symptom of a bacterial outbreak, expelling fluids from Leier with the force of a damn firehose. Taking place only her bathroom, she moves from toilet to bathtub in an attempt to try and relieve herself, but every inch of the tile room is covered - sweet Mother of Mary, I need to stop describing the scene because I'm feeling queasy already. This is it - the granddaddy of gross-outs. Just believe what I say, or dare to give the scene a watch yourself. ABCs Of Death 2 - V Is For Vacation I personally think that the ABCs of Death movies are genius, and I wish that one would come out every year. They offer 26 short films all revolving around death, and they are always varied and wild, with a little something for everyone. While I think the sequel improved on its predecessor in every way, there was one particular segment that stood out to me: V is for Vacation. As most will tell you, the last few letters in this movie are all astounding (and insane), but I went with V for Vacation because it was so palpable and real. It follows two dudes who take a vacation. One is talking on Facetime with his fiancé when his friend grabs the phone and reveals what they have really been doing on their vacation: coke and hookers. We slowly watch as these hookers come to after a night of being tossed around, and they are not happy with how they have been treated. We then witness them lay waste to the two men in the most visceral of manners while the woman on the other end of the phone watches on in terror. Think about it. Not only did this man's fiancé just find out that the love of her life is a scumbag, but she also watches him get brutally murdered for it. Actually, some women would probably call that instant karma. Still, it's disturbing as hell and didn't leave my mind for a very long time. Child Of God (Tie) - Necrophilia And Shitting In The Woods So, not only is this James Franco-written/directed movie filled with the most disturbing scenes of the year, but it was also easily the most disturbing movie I saw in 2014, hands down. How a guy can go from making a movie about a mentally ill necrophiliac to starring in a mainstream cell phone commercial in the same year is beyond me, but it also blows my mind. Child of God is based off the gripping Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name about a mentally ill man who is left on his own and slowly descends deeper and deeper into a world of madness. I knew the novel was bleak and disturbing, and sat down expecting Franco to give us some watered down version of it. Instead, though, we get the real deal: A brutal and unflinching glimpse into the world of a man who is sipping into hell. When it came to this movie, I could not decide what disturbed me more. The scene of the lead actor taking an actual shit in the woods (like, shown up close), or the extended scenes of him having sex with dead bodies (one of which can be seen below). I decided that both fucked with me enough that they deserved mention in the same slot. Props to Franco here, as begrudgingly as I want to give them. He did a brooding book justice, and was unafraid to look at the sickness portrayed here and illuminate it. Ultimately, this is a tragic tale about a man not capable of taking care of himself, left to fend for himself in a world that didn't want him (and one he clearly didn't belong in). Also, Scott Haze gave the best performance of the year here, hands down. Seriously. At no point are you watching a man acting feral. You just feel like you are witnessing a sick man get sicker. It's tough to stomach at times, but very powerful (and super disturbing and depressing). Extraterrestrial - Anal Probe Moment Extraterrestrial may have suffered from some subpar acting, but it also might be the best "alien abduction" movie since Fire in the Sky. We have all thought about what it would be like to be abducted, and I also know we probably wonder what horrible things aliens do to us. Though most alien movies have implied some of the things that get done, Extraterrestrial takes its final moments to actually SHOW us. This means that yes, the dreaded anal probe that has been the source of laughter and mirth among pop culture jokers for years gets the film treatment here, but it is FAR from being funny. All I will say about it is that it looks a lot more painful than we have ever imagined. Also, the word probe makes it sound round. They need to rename it "spiky, rotating asshole punisher" to be more accurate. Honestly, I always thought that being abducted by aliens might be kinda cool, but this scene made me rethink that. Life Itself - Seeing Jawless Roger Ebert Get ready, because we are about to take the idea of "disturbing film moments" to all new heights. How so? Because everything on this list so far has been fiction. In this case, disturbing is real, and if you are anything like me, it will hit you like a fist to the gut. Life Itself is a documentary about the life of film critic Roger Ebert. He was a man who set the tone for what every single one of us on this site are doing right now and a man who forever changed the way we discuss and look at films. While you may not have always agreed with his opinions, I think the best of us can admit that he changed the world of cinema. But as you know, Roger Ebert ended up meeting a tragic fate at the end of his life due to Thyroid cancer. In the middle of the documentary, some specialists end up having to do surgery on the renowned critic, and as some of you may know, he lost his bottom jaw as a result. Let me be clear that I am not putting this scene on the "disturbing" list because it is creepy, I am putting it here because it is disturbing in the deepest sense of the word. It is seeing another man, a man who used his voice and words, suddenly suffering and unable to do that. It disturbs profoudly, and stays with you in the same way a lingering fever does. V/H/S/: Viral - Monster Cock Moment V/H/S/: Viral is a fun romp that proved that a third entry in a series doesn't always have to be bad. Bringing the entire story together in a way that previous chapters hadn't, V/H/S/: Viral (after a weak opening piece) got me excited about where this anthology has the potential to go. The Parallel Monsters segment might actually be the best of the bunch, just for the sheer scope and audacity of it. While I have already ruined the punchline here by telling you there are "monster cocks," that is actually only half the story. There is a disturbing monster vagina, too. Oh, and the end of this segment works to cement its brilliance. Just trust me, go watch it now.
