The Samurai Fight (Sucker Punch)
Even though none of us still know what 2011’s Sucker Punch was about, we can all agree that it at least looked pretty and was easy on the eyes. Moving away from the gothic and steampunk undertones of the rest of the flick, the best portion of this ludicrous adventure is undoubtedly when Babydoll dukes it out with the three samurais in feudal Japan. Why? We still have no idea, but you can Google it if you’re bored.
As expected, the color palette is typical Snyder-esque as are the camera techniques and tricks applied. It’s all very much in your face and keeps you hooked on the edge of your seat, as the modern David versus Goliath(s) scenario plays out to a predictable outcome. However, it all gets a little wacky when the one samurai pulls out a machine gun and starts firing away at Babydoll, but the payoff is worth it at the end of the day if you stick with it. Still, we wonder what inspired this utterly strange battle to even be imagined.
As undoubtedly Snyder’s most bizarre body of work yet, Sucker Punch isn’t exactly the first film you’d rush to watch on a night off. Nevertheless, when it does soar, it’s beautiful to behold and take in. A piece of advice, though: maybe skip the whole confusing narrative bit and just fast-forward to the cool samurai fight instead.
