7 Movies That Need Their Own Kickstarter Campaign

How much would you pay to greenlight a sequel to your favorite movie or resurrect your favorite canceled TV show for a feature length film? Would you donate $10 and receive a page of the actual script, or would you donate $10,000 in return for an on-screen talking role in the film itself? Sure, it's worked for short films and other projects, but could a big-budget film requiring millions of dollars in start-up cash be able to raise enough from the public to appease studio heads before investing themselves?

Genndy Tartakovsky is a legend when it comes to Cartoon Network, creating both Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack while participating in some capacity with shows like The Powerpuff Girls, but his flashy homage to the ninja genre is the one show all his fans want to see as a feature film. Dexter had his fun and The Powerpuff Girls ended strongly as well, but Jack’s four seasons just weren’t enough – the people want more Jack!

The Kickstarter format works best with cult-worshipped TV shows, highlighting the market for a project, and Samurai Jack certainly fits in that category. There’s something uniquely gratifying and visually astonishing about our honorable warrior and his adventures, animated with a slick style and fast-paced action. This isn’t your normal ninja-fighting show. Tartakovsky was able to re-invent the genre somewhat with his more kid-friendly approach, but he also managed to incorporate everything that makes a good ninja piece work – showcased by the vast age range of Samurai Jack‘s most outspoken fans.

Tartakovsky is always trying to get this film made, recently commenting that Jack is number one on his priorities list, but I think a proper Kickstarter campaign would speed the process along for studio executives not positive on just how big of a fanbase Jack has amassed. Sadly though, the voice of Jack’s nemesis Aku, Mako, has since passed, so that’s one piece a movie would be missing – be it a fixable yet sad problem.

If you’ve still never seen anything Samurai Jack, check out one of his many hypnotizing battles below:

That’s it for my list of Kickstarter hopefuls, but I’d love to hear what movies other people think should get a Kickstarter sequel campaign. Let me know in the comments!
