7 Spectacular Superhero Romances

For many, there is nothing like relaxing in the arms of the one you love after a hard day at work. Spending time with that special someone, who helps you forget all the stresses and strains of the daily grind, can be invaluable for re-charging the batteries. In this respect, superheroes are just like the rest of us. They may not all bleed when you prick them, but they do all seem to need a little tender loving care from time to time.

Hancock

They were created in pairs, these super-powered beings, and as such, Hancock and Mary are destined to always find each other – millennia after millennia. The problem is that, being near each other leaves them weakened and vulnerable to attack. It is the height of romantic conflict, until they go and see a movie and he gets hit over the head by some ne’er-do-wells – leaving him without memory and in a very bad mood. Mary takes the opportunity to save him, by abandoning him – allowing his strength to return and giving him an opportunity to recover.

Then, decades later, Mary bumps into new Dad Ray at the grocery store, and the two hit it off. He is grieving for his wife who recently died giving birth to their first child, and Mary helps him choose which nappies to buy. Fast forward a number of years to the movie, and Mary and Ray are happily married and raising Ray’s son together, while Hancock gets drunk and places bad guys’ heads in unspeakable places.

It is Ray’s role as a PR man that brings him and Hancock together, and thus Hancock and Mary are placed in close proximity once more. She is deeply conflicted – knowing the truth about Hancock, and being afraid to tell him his own story – but eventually cracks under the pressure, leading to a violent and explosive showdown in the middle of a city street. Mary, it seems is just as powerful as Hancock.

But, they are both eventually weakened, and Hancock is subsequently injured by grocery store thieves. While lying in hospital, he comes under attack from disgruntled and traumatized villains he already punished. Mary gets shot, Ray gets scared, and Hancock has to rise to the occasion to defeat the enemy. Remembering Mary’s words about the nature of their dynamic, Hancock drags himself further and further away until Mary’s strength returns, allowing doctors to resuscitate her.

Mary and Ray live happily ever after, and Hancock puts Ray’s logo on the moon – a tragic sacrifice in a tragic love story.
