7 Spectacular Superhero Romances

For many, there is nothing like relaxing in the arms of the one you love after a hard day at work. Spending time with that special someone, who helps you forget all the stresses and strains of the daily grind, can be invaluable for re-charging the batteries. In this respect, superheroes are just like the rest of us. They may not all bleed when you prick them, but they do all seem to need a little tender loving care from time to time.

There have been a lot of women in the life of Batman. A lot of women. Like, a really high number of women. But, it is Catwoman that is perhaps the most significant – and not just because of their mutual love of clingy, black costumes.

Catwoman’s alter-ego, Selina Kyle, says it best in Batman Returns, when she discusses former relationships with Bruce Wayne and refers to a “difficulty with duality” as an obstacle to success in the romantic arena. This is the essence of why the Bat and the Cat seem to continually find each other in the shadows of Gotham.

The masked persona of both was created in response to an incompatibility with society – his after the murder of his parents, and hers after either continued social pressure, or a messed up childhood depending on which movie you watch.

They share a mutual loathing of injustice, and a mutual desire to re-balance the scales – it’s just that they are often conflicted about causes, methods and the boundaries of moral ambiguity. This means that they are continually fascinated and challenged by one another – even when she appears to blow herself up while making out with Max Schreck.
