In the comics (and this movie), Stephen Strange initially only tracks down The Ancient One as a way of hopefully getting his hands repaired so he can return to his life as a top neurosurgeon. The first teaser for the movie almost made it look like he simply becomes a reluctant student, but this one makes it clear that he really puts in the work in order to become a master of the mystic arts.

What leads to his change in attitude isn’t elaborated on here, but it definitely appears as if the character is going to be taken on a very satisfying journey in what looks set to be a movie which delivers a more satisfying tale than the vast majority of big screen superhero origin stories. It also looks like Stephen’s training will be touched on in depth rather than just in a montage, which is encouraging to know.
