8 Awesome Moments From The Doctor Strange Comic-Con Trailer

James Gunn said that the footage shown from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at Comic-Con this past Saturday wouldn't be released online, and it hasn't been. However, Marvel Studios more than made up for that by debuting a brand new trailer for Doctor Strange, the first of their Phase 3 movies which reaches the big screen this November courtesy of director Scott Derrickson. It didn't reveal a whole lot more than that first teaser did in terms of plot details, but the latest preview for this highly anticipated release was still packed full of never before seen footage, which made it clear that Doctor Strange is going to be Marvel's most unique - and quite possibly most exciting - movie to date. Benedict Cumberbatch taking on the role of the Sorcerer Supreme is something fans spent years dreaming about (he's one of those rare casting decisions which was suggested online long before the studio picked him), and he looks set to deliver in a big way here. So, with all that in mind, we've broken down the Doctor Strange trailer's biggest and best moments, giving you a couple of reasons why they're significant and what they could mean for the film. 8) The Visuals Similarities to Christopher Nolan's Inception are inevitable here, but Doctor Strange is definitely doing something very interesting (and never before seen) when it comes to its visuals. From the way The Ancient One teleports herself and Stephen across the globe to New York folding in on itself, Marvel has clearly held nothing back when it comes to special effects and if the 3D doesn't take advantage of that, it will be a crying shame. Many artists have taken a crack at the adventures of the Sorcerer Supreme over the years, but it's pretty obvious that Derrickson is turning to the trippy imagery used by Steve Ditko in the character's earliest adventures back in the 1960s. However, he's still delivering something new, and there's certainly not another comic book movie out there that's as visually interesting as Doctor Strange promises to be. 7) New York City In Peril Thanks to some recently revealed toys for Doctor Strange, we now know that Hannibal alum Mads Mikkelsen is playing the villainous Kaecilius. A relatively obscure comic book character, little is known about this big screen version, but he's clearly being set up as a major threat to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That's something the trailer makes abundantly clear by putting New York City, and presumably the entire world, in serious peril. What makes that a big deal is the fact that Stephen is going to take on an Avengers level threat all by himself, something which is going to help establish the Sorcerer Supreme as a key player in Phase 3 right from the very start. 6) The Birth Of The Marvel Multiverse Ant-Man introduced us to the concept of the Quantum Realm, but it will be Doctor Strange which tackles the Marvel Multiverse. Whether or not that means we'll start seeing alternate realities and different versions of our favourite superheroes is still unknown, but this is without a doubt something which has the potential to shake up pretty much every movie moving forward. Assuming Doctor Strange appears in Avengers: Infinity War, the ability to enter or send something to another reality is sure to come in handy when Thanos and his army arrive on Earth, and getting to explore that in the hero's solo outing this November is really exciting. This trailer obviously only offers up the briefest of teases, but what happens next looks set to be something pretty special. 5) Stephen Strange's Desire To Learn In the comics (and this movie), Stephen Strange initially only tracks down The Ancient One as a way of hopefully getting his hands repaired so he can return to his life as a top neurosurgeon. The first teaser for the movie almost made it look like he simply becomes a reluctant student, but this one makes it clear that he really puts in the work in order to become a master of the mystic arts. What leads to his change in attitude isn't elaborated on here, but it definitely appears as if the character is going to be taken on a very satisfying journey in what looks set to be a movie which delivers a more satisfying tale than the vast majority of big screen superhero origin stories. It also looks like Stephen's training will be touched on in depth rather than just in a montage, which is encouraging to know. 4) That Trademark Marvel Humour Marvel has found a good balance of action, drama, and humour since the release of Iron Man in 2008, but it was really The Avengers that was a game changer when it came to finding a perfect balance. Since then, the vast majority of the studio's movies have been every bit as funny as they are emotional and exciting, and if the trailer's final scene is any indication, that will also be the case for Doctor Strange. Mordo telling Strange that the "mantra" he's just handed him is actually the WiFi password for The Ancient One's home is awesome, and hopefully a moment which makes it into the final cut despite it having been revealed here. The dynamic between Cumberbatch's Sorcerer Supreme and Chiwetel Ejiofor's Mordo actually looks set to be one of the movie's highlights, so hopefully they share a lot of screentime. 3) A New Role For Wong In the comic books, Wong was Doctor Strange's manservant. That obviously stems from the character being created in a very different time, but he's never really shed his image as a racist stereotype, especially as recent years have seen the character do little more than utilize his martial arts skills between making tea for his "master." Thankfully, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version is quite a bit different, and this trailer appears to make it clear that he's actually on the same level as Mordo when it comes to being one of The Ancient One's most trusted allies and an adviser to Stephen. That's a great new role for Wong, and hopefully we'll get to see much more of him moving forward as he definitely appears to have a pretty intriguing part to play in the movie. 2) Those Incantations We've already seen magic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to the Scarlet Witch, and one of the biggest questions fans have had about Doctor Strange is how this movie would differentiate the way Stephen uses his powers to that member of The Avengers. Well, we quickly get an answer to that in this trailer thanks to the spells the hero casts creating those awesome looking energy rings around his hands. That's something quite literally lifted straight out of the comic books, and you have to hand it to Marvel and director Scott Derrickson for making them a) look so good, and b) actually work in live-action. It's a tough bit of imagery to pull off, but like everything else we've seen from this movie so far, it appears as if it's been handled in a way sure to make fans very happy indeed. 1) A Sure To Be Epic Battle Near the end of the trailer, we see Doctor Strange seemingly battling Kaecilius as the street around them crumbles and then rebuilds itself. Some serious magical energy is clearly being expelled during this fist fight, and it looks like the movie is going to make things really personal for Strange here. Whether or not this is the final battle remains to be seen (bear in mind that set photos have shown Benedict Cumberbatch looking pretty beaten up), but this looks amazing either way. When you take into account the fact that we still have no idea if Mordo is truly as good as he appears and is Dormammu is involved - the Sorcerer Supreme's greatest enemy - it's clear Marvel has plenty of surprises up their sleeve when it comes to what we should expect from the upcoming flick.
