8 Awesome Moments From The Wonder Woman Comic-Con Trailer

Wonder Woman is a movie which has been stuck in development hell for years now, with Warner Bros. seemingly reluctant to move forward with a female led superhero blockbuster after seeing the way the likes of Catwoman and Elektra flopped. Finding the right story also always seemed to be a challenge for them, too, and not even Joss Whedon could talk them into making it. However, when it came time to announce a DC Films slate, there was no way that Wonder Woman couldn't be included, especially now that moviegoers are crying out for more diversity in these comic book adaptations. So, after taking on a key role in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, next summer will see the Amazonian warrior step up to the plate for her first big screen solo outing. It's long overdue, but still a risky movie in some ways. Should it for some reason fail, we can expect the status quo to remain the same, but if it succeeds (and it really looks like it might), then everything could change. So, after Warner Bros. released the first trailer on Saturday, we gave it a handful of watches and have chosen the best moments from one of the weekend's most exciting sneak peeks. 8) The Origin Story Like most DC Comics characters, Wonder Woman has a few different origin stories. The one which lasted the longest revolved around her being a clay figure created by her mother Queen Hippolyta before being brought to life by Olympian deities. More recently, Zeus has been confirmed as being her father, something which has given the character's comic book series the chance to shine a spotlight on a different sort of mythology. Based on Diana's comments to Steve Trevor in the trailer, it appears as if we may be getting a mixture of the two as she confirms that she was brought to life by Zeus. The hero says she has no father, but it honestly wouldn't be that surprising for it to be revealed along the way that she actually does. Either way, this is an intriguing reveal and one that's piqued our interest greatly. 7) The Lasso We got to see Wonder Woman wield the Lasso of Truth in Batman V Superman, and it's great to see the same glowing effect return for her solo movie. However, while it was used sparingly in Dawn of Justice, as Diana attempted to overpower Doomsday, it looks like it will be one of her most trusted weapons in Wonder Woman. Seeing her use it to take down these soldiers points to the lasso playing a key role in scenes like this, and that's no bad thing, especially as it offers up a bit of variation from the typical hand to hand combat or swordplay. One thing this trailer doesn't address though is whether or not the lasso compels those touched by it to tell the truth, and it would be a shame to see that left out. Hopefully we'll see it being used for both that and as a weapon, as it'd make Diana an even bigger badass. 6) Life In Themyscira Like Captain America: The First Avenger (another superhero movie which doubled as a period piece), Wonder Woman has a lot to squeeze in. It's essential that her life on Themyscira be explored before she heads into the wider world and becomes part of World War I, and if this trailer is any indication, we'll spend a decent amount of time with the Amazons. Only snippets of their culture is glimpsed here, though it looks every bit as unique as Asgard from the Thor movies and the scenes with the warrior women in battle look set to be a highlight. It's entirely possible that Wonder Woman will be the only movie where we spend any time here, too, especially as there has to be a reason why Diana spent years hiding in our world before being discovered by Bruce Wayne. 5) The Mystery Villain As of right now, we still don't know who or what the villain/s will be in Wonder Woman. Ares has been rumoured, and if so, chances are that Danny Huston is playing him, as we see here that he's a German higher up who Diana seemingly intends to dispatch of. Why is the God of War pulling the strings, though? Well, he obviously thrives in a world where a war like this is raging, but the reasons Diana leaves her home to get involved with all of this is something we simply don't know as of right now. Whatever the answer may be, he looks like a pretty formidable threat, as does that mysterious woman in the mask. If anything, the trailer just emphasizes the fact that we still know very little about Wonder Woman, and at this early stage, that's not necessarily a bad thing. 4) That Theme Is Back Say what you will about Batman V Superman, but Zack Snyder absolutely nailed Wonder Woman's entrance on the battlefield during that final fight. It was a moment helped by the fantastic piece of music which accompanied it, and it's easy to see why some screenings featured applause and cheers during that scene. Based on the way the trailer for the character's solo outing ends, the theme is actually going to carry on over into this adventure, and that's a very wise move by Warner Bros. and director Patty Jenkins. It'll help the hero stand out both here and in the upcoming Justice League movie, not to mention that when it comes down to it, ti's also just a really great piece of music and makes Wonder Woman a lot more badass. 3) A Very Different Tone To Batman V Superman By this stage, you don't need me to remind you of the numerous complaints which have been levelled at Batman V Superman over the past few months, but the one that still stands out is the fact that it simply wasn't "fun" enough. Agree or disagree, this first look at Wonder Woman offers up a very different tone to both that and Man of Steel. The World War I setting could have very easily led to this being an overly dark and gritty affair, and while those battle scenes clearly aren't taking this real life historical event too lightly, there are some other great moments of humour featured here. Those include the first meetings between Diana and Steve and Diana and Etta, both of which lead us to believe that Jenkins has found the right balance for this movie. 2) World War I Action The First Avenger is an underrated gem in my opinion, but an argument could definitely be made that it didn't fully take advantage of that unique World War II setting as much as it should have. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, seems to be fully embracing WWI as we see fights taking place from the trenches, soldiers (and Diana, obviously) riding into battle on horseback, and even aerial battles - with Chris Pine's Steve Trevor in the cockpit - which could very well steal the show if given an adequate amount of time. This and the other fight scenes showcased throughout the trailer point to lots of different set pieces in terms of action, and that's very good news, especially as it should help keep things feeling fresh throughout and shows us that the filmmakers are utilizing the era that this is set in properly. 1) Wonder Woman Kicks Some Serious Ass I mentioned Diana's fight scenes previously, but seriously, how great is it to finally see the Amazonian warrior kicking ass like this in live-action? Batman V Superman made it clear that she's a force to be reckoned with, but it will clearly be Wonder Woman which really emphasizes why that is. However, as great as it is to see Wonder Woman effortlessly take out the soldiers standing in her way, the most empowering moment arguably comes when she dismisses Steve Trevor's insistence that he can't let her do what she plans to (what that is remains to be seen). Most superhero movies would have the male hero step forward to save the day after a comment like that, but Wonder Woman shoots him down in order to do what she pleases - tell me that isn't freakin awesome.
