8 Burning Questions Captain America: Civil War Left Us With

Fans who have already seen Captain America: Civil War can breathe a sigh of relief that the movie is just as awesome as we all hoped, managing to deliver the requisite superhero vs. superhero action but also never losing sight of the characters and the story. It certainly did succeed in a lot of ways, but it did also leave a few questions unanswered. Some of these are things the film didn’t clarify as well as it could in amongst all the heart-pumping action, while others were deliberately put in there to tease us for future installments. One such question is: who's that guy in the red and blue underoos, who apparently has spider powers? Does anyone have any idea of how he got his abilities? That seems like a story never told before that really needs to be… Joking aside, the following are eight actual questions we're aching to have answered after watching Captain America: Civil War. Naturally, spoilers will be found within if you haven’t seen the movie. If you've yet to see it, bookmark this page and come back once you have. 8) Where Was Nick Fury? In case you’ve been living under a rock, we’ll remind you that Captain America: Civil War sees the Avengers split down the middle over the issue of government oversight and superhero accountability. Just about everyone is involved, from old hats to newbies – even The Incredible Hulk’s General Ross makes an unexpected comeback. Thor and Hulk going AWOL is referenced (setting up their team-up in Thor: Ragnarok), but there is another big MCU player who is nowhere to be seen in Civil War: Nick Fury. Narratively, of course, Fury wasn’t around because he would surely easily sort out the conflict between the heroes, given how he's had a lot of experience rousing them together for a single cause. Still, it would have been nice to have at least one line that explained away his absence, as it left a Samuel L Jackson-shaped hole in the movie that wasn’t filled. 7) How Are Peggy And Sharon Related? Though we met Sharon ‘Agent 13’ Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it took until Civil War for us to have her relationship to Steve’s long lost love Peggy Carter explained. At the S.H.I.E.L.D. founder’s funeral, Sharon reveals that Peggy was her aunt, having kept the fact a secret so she could stand outside her famous relative’s shadow. This will raise an eyebrow from Agent Carter fans, as that show’s second season explained that Peggy’s beloved brother died during the war. It was strongly implied in the series that Peggy didn’t have any other siblings, but if that's the case, then how is Sharon Peggy’s niece? In interviews, Emily VanCamp has described Sharon as Peggy’s great-niece, which explains the age difference, though it still doesn’t entirely clear up matters. This is a pretty minor issue, of course, and is only likely to keep extremely hardcore fans up at night. 6) Are Tony And Pepper Over? Early on in Civil War, we learn of the surprising development that Tony and Pepper are currently separated, something that is eating at Tony and contributes to him signing the Sokovia Accords. It is explained that their relationship became strained after Tony repeatedly returned to active superhero duty as Iron Man, after promising to retire after the events of Iron Man 3. But does this mean that Tony and Pepper have broken up for good? Like Natalie Portman’s absence from future Thor movies, this split could have been forced upon the characters by Gwyneth Paltrow wanting to move on. Or perhaps this is setting up a reunion in Iron Man 4, which Downey Jr. is suddenly up for doing again. On the other hand, Tony seemed to hit it off with Aunt May in this movie – could Peter Parker be about to land himself a super-cool step uncle? 5) Where Has Thanos Gone? Any Marvel fan knows that all of the MCU films so far have been building up to a huge confrontation with cosmic bad guy Thanos, which will play out in the two part Avengers: Infinity War. As such, Thanos has been popping up in numerous post-credits scenes and cameos – particularly in those movies that feature a compilation of heroes. It is surprising, then, that the big fella does not feature in Civil War in any form. Seeing as Avengers: Age of Ultron set him up to go looking for the Infinity Stones himself, it does beg the question of what in the universe Thanos is doing during all of this. It has also been confirmed that he won’t appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so we might not see him again until his starring role in Infinity War: Part One. Surely he's realized that the Stones have tended to revolve around Earth by now, right? 4) Will Zemo Return? Though the driving force of Civil War is the conflict between the heroes, there is still a villain waiting in the wings. This is Daniel Bruhl’s Helmut Zemo, who aims to bring down the Avengers due to a thirst for revenge. At the end of the movie, he is incarcerated in supervillain prison the Raft, but the guy seems suspiciously confident that his evil plans are not dead and buried. As such, this ending raises the question of whether Zemo will return in a future MCU installment - most likely in Phase Four (Captain America 4, perhaps?). What Marvel could be doing here is introducing a version of the character who is extremely different from the comics only to get him closer to the source material as things move along, in a similar way to Crossbones. If we do see Zemo again, perhaps next time he will don his signature purple hood? 3) What’s Next For Bucky? Another thing that Civil War does very well is balance the argument over the Accords with the story of Bucky’s redemption. The former Winter Soldier is a hugely important part of the plot, and is perhaps even the third biggest presence behind Cap and Iron Man. A post-credits scene sees him being put on ice in Wakanda, under the care of King T’Challa; the aim being that he will be defrosted once a method is found to properly cure him of his HYDRA conditioning. But when will we next see Bucky? Presumably, he'll play a part in the Infinity War extravaganza, but what turn will his character take next? Many believe he will follow on from his friend and become the next Captain America. Given that Sebastian Stan has apparently signed on for more films than Chris Evans, it does seem like a strong possibility… 2) Are Team Cap Fugitives? In his opposition to the Sokovia Accords, and therefore Iron Man and his allies, Captain America recruits Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye and Ant-Man onto his team. Naturally, with the whole of the government against them, the team end up getting imprisoned. However, they are eventually freed by Cap in the movie’s final scene. So, are these band of breakaway heroes now on the run? Will they continue on fighting crime in a covert capacity, like Cap’s Secret Avengers team from the comics? Similarly, Black Widow ends the movie as a fugitive as well – is she set to join Cap’s team? More importantly, perhaps, when will the team reform with Iron Man’s group, which they must surely do in time for Avengers: Infinity War? Maybe an attack from the big blue guy is the event that causes them to put aside their differences and fight together once again? 1) Is Steve Rogers Retired? In the aforementioned final scene, when Cap breaks his friends out of the Raft, he also does something that will make fans of the character gasp; he discards his shield. Perhaps motivated by Iron Man’s accusation that he doesn’t deserve to wield Howard Stark’s creation any more, Steve Rogers looks set for a big change. So, does this mean that he's retiring the persona of Captain America? That’s pretty big, considering it has been what has defined him for the past seventy years. In the comics, Cap has given up wearing the flag on several occasions, going by the aliases The Captain and Nomad. Are we about to see a similar change of heart come over the cinematic character? And how long does he have left, anyway? Many were predicting him to die in Captain America: Civil War, but for now he lives to fight another day. Will Infinity War be Steve’s last battle, though? Only time will tell…
