8 Characters We Want To See In A Suicide Squad Sequel

Before Suicide Squad arrived in cinemas, it seemed a certainty that the movie would spawn at least one sequel – and possibly several more, if rumours were to be believed. Now that critics and a sizeable chunk of the fans have savaged the film, however, it's not yet known whether a Suicide Squad 2 is still on the cards. The real test of a movie’s success, of course, is how much money it makes. Currently, Suicide Squad is closing on a pretty mighty $500 million. That’s quite a hefty amount of cash, but it should be remembered that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 drew in $800 million at the global box office and still failed to warrant a sequel. We really won’t know the verdict on this one until a sequel is announced. But, let’s take it for granted that a follow-up is on the way. As is the wont of superhero sequels, Task Force X would no doubt be expanded in a second outing, which leads us to ask the question of which characters we'd like to see fill out the team’s ranks. And so, on that note, here are eight DC villains who we'd love to see appear in Suicide Squad 2. 8) King Shark Despite being a longtime member of the Suicide Squad in the comics, King Shark was nowhere to be seen in the movie – his role effectively replaced by team newcomer Killer Croc. Shark’s removal from the line-up was due to director David Ayer’s preference for prosthetics over CGI, something that would have been impossible with such a huge, monstrous creature. Hopefully, Ayer – if he is indeed still at the helm – will relax his opinion on this for the sequel, as fans would love to see King Shark turn up. Just look at the reaction when he appeared on The Flash’s second season. Such a crazy comic book character was a welcome and surprising addition to that show’s rogues gallery, just as he would be to the DC Extended Universe. 7) Bronze Tiger Probably the most significant member of the Suicide Squad in the comics who is not yet in the film version is Bronze Tiger AKA Ben Turner. Created in the 1970s by Dennis O'Neil, Jim Berry and Richard Dragon, TV viewers may remember him from his stint on Task Force X in Arrow’s second season where he was played by Spawn’s Michael Jai White. In a Suicide Squad sequel, Bronze Tiger could fill the role left by El Diablo, as the squaddie who is repentant about his past crimes. While Turner is sometimes a member of the League of Assassins, originally he was one of the good guys - acting as Rick Flag's second-in-command. A former member of Ra’s Al Ghul’s elite squad of martial artists gone good would make for a really interesting addition to the team, don't you think? 6) Killer Frost There are no shortage of ice-orientated villains in the DC universe – Mister Freeze, Captain Cold, Icicle Sr,, Icicle Jr... However, the one who needs to appear in the Task Force X line-up next is Killer Frost. The character has served on multiple versions of the team, and was only removed from the squad for The New 52 reboot in 2011. Though you might think Killer Frost is currently locked in on the TV side of things, as she recently appeared on The Flash, this isn’t quite the case. That show features the Caitlin Snow version of the character, but the incarnation who is usually associated with the Suicide Squad is Louise Lincoln. Lincoln previously appeared in the Batman: Assault on Arkham animated movie as part of the team and she even had an eyebrow-raising flirtatious relationship with King Shark. 5) The Riddler Another character who featured in Batman: Assault on Arkham, the Riddler had a significant role in that film as it was his stolen information that got the squad sent into action in the first place. For a Suicide Squad sequel, though, we think it would be interesting to see Mr. E. Nygma join the team for real. Despite his name recognition, the Riddler probably isn’t a big enough threat to be the central villain of a Batman solo movie nowadays. It would be much more sense, then, to feature him on Task Force X. Let’s face it, he's also pretty hard to take seriously a lot of the time - don't give Batman clues, you idiot! - so it could be fun to see him as the butt of the joke. Plus, we can definitely imagine Will Smith’s Deadshot getting quickly irritated by a guy who incessantly recites riddles. 4) Catwoman Like the Riddler, Catwoman is another of Batman’s rogues gallery who is not usually connected to the Suicide Squad. But after so many of Gotham’s criminals turned up in the first movie, Selina Kyle would be a natural fit for the team on the big screen. For starters, Catwoman is often presented as an anti-hero, so she would be a good pick for the Task Force X program. She and Harley could also have an interesting relationship. Both have feelings for men who it can never work out with (Joker and Batman, respectively), after all. And, in a way that would actually pass the Bechdel test, they could also bond over their wild natures. We’ve had many cinematic versions of Catwoman, but seeing her forced to do good with the Suicide Squad could make the character fresh again. 3) Lex Luthor Yes, Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor was by far one of the most complained about aspects of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Still, now that he’s here, the DCEU needs to bring him back to try and find a way to save the character. While the calm and commanding mastermind Lex usually is would not be a natural fit for the Suicide Squad, we think Eisenberg’s twitchy young psychopath would be an easy bedfellow of Harley Quinn or Captain Boomerang. He might even be better served as a part of an anti-hero team rather than in a sole villain role, as we saw in BvS. There could also be some fun to be had from seeing the billionaire having to slum it with these common criminals when he thinks he's destined for greatness. 2) Deathstroke For ages it was rumoured that Scott (son of Clint) Eastwood’s character in Suicide Squad would be someone huge. The two big theories were that he was either Nightwing or Deathstroke. Sadly, neither turned out to be true – but we still really want to see Slade Wilson appear in the sequel. Fans already know how awesome the guy can be in a live-action capacity from his status as the best villain on Arrow (as played by Manu Bennett). Known as Deathstroke the Terminator, it won’t surprise you to know that the character is a damn fine assassin and mercenary who, unlike Deadshot, possesses super powers - more specifically, super strength, agility, endurance and intelligence. Seeing as his Marvel counterpart Deadpool (Wade Wilson rather than Slade) has already got his own film, it’s about time this fan favourite was brought to the big screen, too. 1) Poison Ivy Poison Ivy was also on our list of characters we would love to see in a Harley Quinn spinoff movie, but on second thought, it might be more interesting to have the villainess first appear in a Suicide Squad sequel. One thing that a follow-up needs to do to appease a large number of fans is to address the unhealthy quality of Harley’s relationship with the Joker. In the comics, this is usually done by having Harley escape the madman and enter into a much more loving friendship/romance with Poison Ivy. The sequel could see Ivy joining the team and Harley realizing that she doesn’t have to be stuck in an abusive relationship. A Harley solo movie, then, could see the pair going at it alone, while the Joker is waiting in the wings to reclaim Harley. Feel free to have this idea, Warner Bros., we just want a cut of the profits. 50% should do...
