8 Female Characters We Really Want To See In The Harley Quinn Movie

Seeing how much of a fan favourite Harley Quinn is, it's surprising that it has taken DC so long to get the character on the big screen. She'll finally make her belated cinematic debut in this August’s Suicide Squad though, and it seems that DC are keen to make up for lost time, as they've already announced that a spinoff movie based around Margot Robbie’s character is in the works. The movie will also apparently feature other prominent female characters from DC comics, though no names have been announced just yet. Two who seem likely are Katana and Enchantress, Harley’s Task Force X teammates who will be played by Karen Fukuhara and Cara Delevingne, respectively. But who else could appear? Harley is related to two groups of women vigilantes in the comics, namely the Birds of Prey and the Gotham City Sirens, so there are definitely a lot of potential candidates. On that note, join us as we take a look at eight other female characters from the DC universe that we'd love to see appear in Harley's spinoff film. 8) Barbara Gordon It's already highly likely that Barbara Gordon is on her way to being introduced into the DC Extended Universe, as it's thought that the part Jena Malone was set to play in Batman V Superman (until her scenes were cut from the theatrical release) was Barbara. Given that, it would be great to see her turn up in some form in a Harley movie. In the comics, Barbara is the founding member of the Birds of Prey. After she's paralyzed by the Joker, she takes the codename Oracle and acts as the eyes and ears of the Birds on their missions. Alternatively, an upcoming series will see her, now back in her Batgirl guise, reform the team. So whatever version of the character DC chose to go with, there is surely a role for her in the film. 7) Manhunter Kate Spencer AKA Manhunter is a character with a lot of potential and one that DC have not used well enough in their adaptations so far. She did sort of make an appearance in a few episodes of Arrow’s first two seasons, but it still wasn’t the fully-fledged character from the comics. Hopefully, a Harley Quinn movie can find a place for her to make up for that. A federal prosecutor, Spencer grows increasingly tired of seeing criminals get off scot-free, so she decides to do something about it. As Manhunter, Spencer channels her inner Frank Castle and isn’t afraid to kill the bad guys if she deems it necessary. Her no-holds-barred methods often bring her into conflict with her teammates on the Birds of Prey, but something tells us that her and Harley Quinn would get on like a house on fire. 6) Lady Blackhawk Marvel have made their throwback character, Captain America, a huge success against all the odds on the big screen. If DC fancy having a go at this sort of thing, they can always introduce Birds of Prey member Lady Blackhawk into the DCEU. Like Cap, Zinda Blake AKA Lady Blackhawk is originally from the 1940s, being an ace aviatrix during the war. However, she becomes lost in time (because comics) and finds herself in the 21st century. Unlike Cap, though, Blackhawk is a hard-drinking brawler and doesn’t share his old-fashioned ideas of straight-laced heroism. Also worth noting is Lady Blackhawk's unconventional best friend and fellow Bird of Prey Big Barda, as she'd be another fun character to see brought to life. A super strong New God from the Fourth World, Barda was raised to be the universe’s greatest warrior, until she turned over to the good side. 5) Black Canary The Black Canary is a character who TV audiences have seen quite a lot of through Arrow, with its two separate versions of the character in the Lance sisters. However, they are both quite different from the comics’ iteration, so DC should definitely look at bringing her into the movies as well. One of DC’s oldest female heroes, Dinah Lance is also the longest-serving member of the Birds of Prey. So if the team does make an appearance in the movie in some form, it can be expected that Black Canary will turn up as well. An expert martial artist with the ability to emit a super-sonic scream, she could easily hold her own alongside the likes of Harley Quinn. 4) Huntress Yet another character who has previously appeared on Arrow, the Huntress is actually a character more commonly tied with Batman. As the Harley Quinn movie will likely take place in Gotham, given the character’s ties to the city, it makes a lot of sense for the film to introduce her. Helena Bertinelli was, unlike Batman, brought up on the wrong side of the law, as the daughter of a mob boss. She realized that her father’s criminal empire needed to be stopped, however, and idolized Batman for being the only thing they feared. Inspired by him, she became her own masked vigilante in his image. Alternatively, DC could go with the other version of Huntress, who is the daughter of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle from Earth Two, but that's probably a tad unlikely right now. 3) Zatanna Not to be confused with the similar-sounding but actually completely different character Katana, Zatanna isn’t a heroine usually paired with the Birds of Prey. However, she is a DC female character who is currently being given the short straw in terms of adaptations, even though she really deserves her time in the limelight. Hopefully, then, the Harley movie can find a place for her. Usually a member of the Justice League – oh, yeah she’s one of the big guns - Zatanna is a stage magician who also has the gift of real magic, being a powerful sorceress. So far, DC doesn’t seem to be shying away from the mystical side of its universe, as Suicide Squad will feature the aforementioned Enchantress. If that character gets a go, then, it's surely just a matter of time before Zatanna does too, right? 2) Catwoman Catwoman is by far the most portrayed DC female character, with the anti-heroine being a fixture of just about every variation of the Batman franchise on screen. The DCEU surely won’t break that trend, then, so it would be nice to see Catwoman turn up in a Harley Quinn movie. Selina Kyle is usually based around her flirtatious relationship with Batman, so it would certainly be fun to see her in a film where the Caped Crusader is presumably (at most) a minor presence. While Catwoman isn’t an out and out psychopath like Harley, Selina is a woman on the wrong side of the law, and both are besotted with those two eternal arch-enemies the Joker and Batman. As such, it would be fascinating to see these different but similar characters come together. If handled well, they could share a really great female double-act. 1) Poison Ivy If there is one of DC’s female characters who really has to appear in the movie, it's Poison Ivy. The green-fingered villainess is usually portrayed as Harley’s best friend, particularly in the acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series for which Harley was first created. In that show and in the comic books, it is often insinuated that Harley and Ivy are lovers – something that fans of the characters have often called to be explored further. Hopefully, a Harley Quinn film will bring this fan favourite love story to the screen in some form. Besides that, Poison Ivy hasn’t been seen on the big screen since the campy portrayal by Uma Thurman in Batman and Robin all the way back in 1998. Given her prominence in the Dark Knight’s rogues gallery, we would pay good money (on our bat credit cards) to see this be rectified soon.
