Nightcrawler (2014)
Lou Bloom is the anti-hero that crime journalism deserves, but not the one it needs. Part satire and part thriller, Nightcrawler follows Jake Gyllenhaal’s titular character as he espouses the “If it bleeds, it leads” concept in journalism.
Desperate for a job, Lou gets involved in crime journalism by following a police scanner and recording the events that unfold. But as he gets more adept at doing so, his innocent motives give way to more sinister actions; how far he’s willing to go to get the best story just might surprise you (and terrify you).
So although this movie has an agenda that you might not have been anticipating, this only improves its ability to get under your skin. No doubt Nightcrawler is as creepy as its title insinuates, but it also poses important questions about the ethics of a story. All journalists take note.
