The 8 Biggest Reveals From The New Avengers: Endgame Trailer

At long last, we can say that Avengers: Endgame is finally arriving this month and, now that tickets are on sale, Marvel has treated us to a third - and possibly - final trailer for the year's most highly-anticipated movie. Labelled a "special look," the minute-long teaser reveals all-new footage from the film that gives us our best feel yet for what's going to happen. While the previous trailers have been careful to hold back on certain key moments, this promo is a little more forthcoming, including giving us a few money shots and character interactions we thought we were going to have to wait until we were in the cinema to see. Not that it gives too much away, but with this new footage, it's possible to start to put together how the shape of the story will form. Bear in mind, however, that directors the Russo brothers have confirmed that certain shots in these trailers have either been digitally-altered or were just plain invented for use in the marketing and might not reflect how things play out in the movie. Still, let's see if we can work out what's real and what's not as we dive into the latest Avengers: Endgame trailer and all its biggest reveals. Cap Takes A Shave, War Machine Lays The Blame The trailer opens up much the same way previous trailers have. Back at the Avengers compound, Bruce Banner warns off the dangers of an unsaid plan. "If we do this, we go in short-changed," he says. This draws ire from Rhodey, who sarcastically comments: "Yeah, you mean 'cos they killed all our friends?" To go along with this discussion, we get a few shots of heroes looking glum. Thor appears to be listening to the conversation while playing with a piece of bread. Elsewhere, Natasha is sitting in the rain as a repeat of her "we owe it to everyone not in this room" speech from the last trailer is heard. Finally, Steve Rogers is shown looking in a bathroom mirror. It's perhaps not the most important revelation in the trailer, but we can presumably pinpoint this moment as when Cap shaves off the beard he grew in Avengers: Infinity War. Note the shaving mirror on his left. The fact that the various heroes decided to freshen up and get new haircuts in Endgame has been a source of mockery for fans but, for Cap at least, the return to his classic look represents that he's had enough of being a Secret Avenger and needs to step into the light again to defeat Thanos. Tony's Back On Earth The first trailer and TV spot tried to lead us to believe that Tony Stark was going to be stuck in space for the whole movie, as he and Nebula were shown to be stranded on the Benatar. The previous trailer, however, allowed us a glimpse of Tony suited up with the rest of the surviving heroes, promising that he would make his way back. And now, this promo gives us the moment where Iron Man returns to Earth. We see the Benatar soaring through the New York skyline before a clip shows us Tony reuniting with Pepper, the two of them clearly desperate to see each other. It seems that Stark comes back with a renewed sense of purpose, as well. A Robert Downey Jr. voiceover says: "It's not about how much we've lost. It's about how much we've got left." So, what can we tell about Tony's return from this? Note that it's nighttime when the Guardians' old ship appears and that Tony and Pepper reunite on the grounds of the Avengers compound. Remember that the TV spot featured a clip of the Avengers standing outside their HQ looking up at the sky. It seems that they were watching the Benatar arriving. But what about how the ship got there in the first place? Theories pointed to Rocket, Captain Marvel or even Pepper rescuing Stark and Nebula, but the TV spot did show Tony and Gamora's sister busy fixing something, so the most likely option is that they managed to get back themselves. This would also explain Tony's "get-up-and-go" attitude. Nebula And Rocket Hold Hands But it's not just Tony who's back. Nebula makes her first trip to Earth - or Terra, as it's known in space - in this trailer, too. She's mostly surrounded by strangers, but there is one old friend there: Rocket. Truth be told, the pair are actually more like enemies/situational allies but the promo does tease that the last of the Guardians will form a bond. In one brief scene that's sure to break any Guardians' fan's heart, a devastated Rocket and a stoic Nebula sit on the steps of the Benatar and hold hands. It really tugs at the heartstrings to see these two characters, who have previously shied away from showing their feelings, so broken that they need some comfort. It really shouldn't be this emotional to watch a CGI raccoon and a blue cyborg connect, but it is. It's easy to work out what's happened here, too. As Tony and Nebula have made it to Earth, the latter has had to inform Rocket that not only did Groot perish in the Decimation but that Star-Lord, Drax and Mantis did as well. Plus, Gamora was killed by Thanos in the hunt for the Soul Stone. Rocket must be crushed by the loss of his family, just as Nebula is by the death of her sister. But at least there's two of them left. Iron Man Back In Action With the previous trailers having held back on giving too much away about Tony's role in Avengers: Endgame, we hadn't been allowed to see him in action, but one brief shot in this preview finally reveals Iron Man, decked out in his new Mark 85 armor. In contrast to the nighttime scene where he reunites with Pepper, this clip features Tony flying around New York in the daylight. It's a sequence that could come out of any of the previous Avengers movies, too - which is actually why I suspect it might be deliberately planted in the trailer and not part of the film. I could be wrong here but, as we all know, that shot of Iron Man and Spidey flying through Manhattan in the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer was engineered to give the promo a big team-up shot. With that in mind, it's possible that Tony's action scenes are too spoiler-y to include in a trailer so this generic-looking shot was created instead. Either that, or we're missing a key ingredient here. Given that we know time travel is involved, what if this isn't actually a post-IW New York Tony's flying through and is really some point in the MCU's past? Smile! Understandably, other Endgame promos have been keen to press how dark things will be when the movie kicks off, as the Avengers struggle to come to terms with the unimaginable losses caused by Thanos. There've been moments of humor - like Ant-Man's return or Thor and Captain Marvel's meeting - but not full-blown hijinks. Interestingly, then, this trailer makes clear that there will still be time for fun. Following the Iron Man shot, we get Hawkeye letting out a thin smile. Then a clip of Black Widow grinning so wide she appears to be holding in a laugh. The next scene, meanwhile, is an alternate take on the Thor/Carol meeting. This time, Carol smiles back as Thor catches Stormbreaker. Given this is the more recent trailer, we can expect this version to be used in the movie. Of course, we knew we were always going to get a certain amount of humor in Endgame, but these shots still come as a bit of surprise given the general tone of the trailers. In particular, Natasha's huge smile is the happiest anyone's looked since Infinity War. Maybe she's reacting to the Avengers coming up with a way to stop Thanos? Steve And Tony Reunited The last time Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans shared the screen as Iron Man and Captain America was all the way back in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. Infinity War teased a reunion but ultimately kept them on different sides of the warfront. Likewise, the previous Avengers: Endgame trailers held off on reuniting the two mightiest Avengers... Until now, that is. At the halfway mark of this special look, we finally get Tony and Steve Rogers face to face once again. First, in a group shot that unites all of the surviving heroes. And then, just in case you were still holding back those tears, in an additional scene that promises all the bad will between them has been forgotten as they shake hands and seem to agree to work together again. "You trust me?" Tony asks Steve in what looks to be a street in downtown New York. Cap hesitates for a moment before replying "I do" and taking Tony's hand. This is a hugely fan-pleasing moment, but we're not sure everything is as it seems. For one, Downey has the same lighter shade of hair and outfit he's got on in set photos that heavily teased a return to the Battle of New York in The Avengers. Those featured Tony interacting with a 2012-era Cap, complete with a much brighter costume. So, what if this scene actually comes from much later in the film than the rest of the trailer and has been altered to fool us? In other clips in this promo, Cap is in a new version of his suit but in this clip, he's wearing his battered, old IW one. Could this be a bit of CG trickery? Avengers In Space With the team back together, the next scene gives us the big reveal of the Avengers in space. We follow the Benatar as it takes off into the cosmos. And who's at the helm but Rocket - it is partly his ship, after all - and Captain Marvel, who's an ace pilot. There's a lot to unpack from this team-up shot alone. For one, not everyone is here. Behind Carol and Rocket, we see Black Widow, War Machine, Thor and Cap. So where are Iron Man, Hawkeye and Ant-Man? They could be elsewhere on the ship, or perhaps they're off on a side-mission? Meanwhile, Carol is in her revamped costume and Natasha has her short blonde hair. So this must happen much earlier than the scenes showing her with long, red locks. We then see that the Benatar's headed to the Sanctuary II. This is Thanos' mothership, as introduced in IW. We last saw the Mad Titan on a backwater planet, but it makes sense that the heroes would travel to his ship to get info on where he is. An additional shot of Nebula looking up at the Sanctuary confirms she's on the Benatar as well. Thanos Returns The Endgame marketing so far has focused on the heroes' struggle, meaning Thanos hasn't been featured all that much - aside from a shot of him walking through a wheat field, apparently enjoying his retirement. This trailer gives us our first bit of Josh Brolin voiceover as the villain, though, and it seems he means business. "You could not live with your own failure," he narrates over a shot of Tony looking at a picture of himself with Peter Parker. "Where did that bring you? Back to me." As he says this final line, the Mad Titan is then revealed in the flesh. We see him beam down to the surface of his ruined homeworld Titan, with a blue shimmer - which tells us that he still has the use of the Space Stone, meaning that the Infinity Gauntlet remains operational - despite its burned-out appearance at the end of IW. However, he's once again decked out in his full armor whereas he went bare-armed in the last movie. He must be feeling vulnerable, even if he's not showing it. The second half of his monologue plays over shots of Thor, Rocket and Cap in distress. Though Steve's shot looks to be on Titan, note that Thor and Rocket are in a different location. Somewhere much more ornate that has an Asgardian flavor. Could this be wherever they reunite with Valkyrie? Has she been guarding over the remains of the Asgardian people? Perhaps tellingly, we only see Iron Man, Captain America and Thor facing Thanos on Titan. Are we seeing a glimpse of the climax here? And does this mean only the Big Three last until the end? Who knows right now, but we've only got a few weeks to wait until Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th and we find out.
