8 Burning Questions We Have After The Avengers: Endgame Trailer

At long last, the first trailer for Avengers 4 - which we now know to be titled Avengers: Endgame - finally arrived today and brought with it our first impression of what awaits us in the grand finale to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. Impression is probably the operative word here as the trailer, quite rightly, didn't give a whole lot away and instead teased the new status quo following the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War. That said, what it did tell us arguably left us with more questions than it answered. Many facets of the trailer clashed with what we thought we knew about the movie, based on supposed leaks and reports. There are a lot of mysteries surrounding Avengers: Endgame then, but here are 8 of the most pressing questions we have after watching the trailer. Let's see if we can come up with some answers for them. Where's Captain Marvel? Avengers: Infinity War's post-credits scene teased the arrival of Captain Marvel in the MCU when Nick Fury sent an S.O.S. to Carol Danvers. The implication was clear: she's going to team up with the rest of the surviving heroes and help save the day in Avengers 4. Seeing as we know that she's set to show up in the film, you might have expected Marvel to capitalize on the popularity the character's had since the hype for her own movie started up by featuring Brie Larson's heroine in the Avengers: Endgame trailer. Especially given the fact that the second Captain Marvel trailer was released earlier this week, there could have been some synergy between the two. However, she was nowhere to be seen. Presumably, Carol's still on her way to Earth when Endgame kicks off. Though, given that there appears to have been a certain passage of time since the Snap, you have to wonder what's taking her so long. Maybe Captain Marvel will clear up the situation a little when we get to see it next March? Are Tony And Nebula On The Benatar Together? The first minute of the Endgame trailer focuses solely on Tony Stark. Without food and drink and a limited air supply, he's stranded in space and is recording a final message to Pepper on his Iron Man helmet. Clearly, he doesn't expect to make it back to Earth. We have lots of questions about this situation as it is, but things get more complicated when Nebula's shown later on in the trailer. Apparently, both Tony and Thanos' other daughter are on the Benatar, the Guardians of the Galaxy's second spaceship. That suggests that, as you'd expect, the pair are traveling off Titan together. However, if that's the case, why are they stranded? While it makes sense for Tony to struggle to pilot the vessel, Nebula knows her way around a spaceship and would surely be able to steer it back to Earth, or at least another world to get rations and more fuel. The other option is that Tony's on his own in that first clip and Nebula's scene on the Benatar happens from another point in the movie. But, if that's the case, why didn't they hitch a ride together? Wait, So Shuri's Dead, Too? We found out the fates of many of our favorite characters in Infinity War, but for others, we didn't get to see whether they turned to dust in the Decimation or if they managed to survive it. Endgame's trailer enlightens us as to what happened to one popular heroine though, and it's not good news. In the scene where Black Widow explains to Steve Rogers and Bruce Banner about the full effects of the Decimation, some digital read-outs show the faces of the allies they believe to have been dusted. The ones we see are Spider-Man (unfortunately, yes - he died on Titan), Ant-Man (nope, he's actually lost in the Quantum Realm) and... Shuri. Wait, what? Black Panther's genius little sister died off-screen? Tragically, it seems so. There was some talk that maybe she would take up her fallen brother's legacy as the protector of Wakanda in Endgame, but this apparently nixes that idea. However, it's worth pointing out that the Avengers' database is wrong about Scott Lang, so perhaps it's wrong about Shuri as well. Where Are The Rest Of The Surviving Heroes? The Avengers: Endgame trailer was never going to be stuffed with heroes, after what happened in Infinity War, but there are some important members of the already limited number of characters still around that we don't see in the teaser, even accounting for Captain Marvel's absence. The most obvious is War Machine. You'd expect Rhodey to be present in the scenes featured at the Avengers facility, though we only ever see Steve, Nat and Bruce - bizarrely, there doesn't seem to be anyone else at the HQ, even staff members. Sure, they should be a little short-staffed, but half the workforce would still be there. So, what's happened to Rhodey? Well, maybe he's returned to the military. In a world that's no doubt descended into chaos following the Decimation, they might need a man like him back on the Air Force. The other big missing person is Rocket. The last of the Guardians was last seen with the Avengers in Wakanda. Given their friendship, he'd presumably hang around with Thor now that he's stuck on Earth. However, we don't see him with the God of Thunder in the brief glimpse of Thor we do get. It's possible he's disappeared back into space following the events between IW and Endgame's beginning, but that's just speculation on our part. What's Up With Hawkeye? Hawkeye's absence was keenly felt by fans in Infinity War, but the Avengers: Endgame trailer finally brings him back and he's changed quite a lot since we last saw him. In one clip, we see a man in dark clothing and a hood slicing and dicing up some goons in Japan with a sword. He pulls down the hood to reveal Jeremy Renner's face. Clint Barton, old buddy, what's happened to ya? Well, comic book fans will recognize that this is the MCU's version of Ronin, Hawkeye's darker alternate alter ego from the source material. In the movie's storyline, though, what's precipitated this extreme change in character for the formerly-retired Avenger? And what possessed him to get that haircut? Rumors have pointed to Clint losing his wife and kids in the Decimation. Apart from his violent new ways, another hint that this will prove to be true is Steve's telling narration that plays over this scene. "We lost families," Cap says as Hawkeye's face appears. Yup, it looks like Clint was the only one of his family to survive. That doesn't seem exactly balanced to us, Thanos. What's The Avengers' Big Plan? Arguably the deepest scene from the Endgame trailer, in terms of how much we can theorize about it, is the scene between Steve and Nat onboard the Quinjet. The use of the picture of Peggy Carter has got fans thinking that Hayley Atwell might be returning while the generally ominous atmosphere suggests that it might be foreshadowing Captain America's death in the movie. The most pertinent question this sequence raises is: what exactly is the Avengers' big plan to fix things? Steve's talk about all that they've lost, that's heard in voiceover, is clearly a rousing speech meant to motivate the troops. Then, on the Quinjet, Nat says to him: "This is gonna work." By the sounds of it, there's a plan of action and, according to Cap, it's going to be the fight of their lives. Reports and theories based on set pics and other evidence have left us with the impression that the Quantum Realm will prove key to resurrecting all of the dead - as the Avengers may travel back through time to reclaim the Infinity Stones before Thanos gets them. However, the way this scene is framed, it seems to be hinting that the heroes are going into more of a straight-forward battle and that's where they're headed. Alternatively, maybe they're just using the Quinjet to hop across the country to get to Hank Pym's lab in San Francisco. Speaking of which... How Did Ant-Man Escape The Quantum Realm? The last time we saw Scott Lang, in the Ant-Man and the Wasp post-credits teaser, he'd been marooned in the Quantum Realm as the Decimation had struck and wiped out Hank Pym and Janet and Hope Van Dyne during an experiment. However, the Endgame trailer reveals that he eventually gets out and comes a-knocking on the Avengers' door. Our big question is, then: how did Scott escape? After all, Janet was stranded down there for 30 years before they rescued her. So, how did Scott get himself out? He did manage it before at the end of the first Ant-Man, but that was more of a quick accidental trip. The AMATW scene suggested he'd been lost in the depths of the place. Cap and Black Widow are clearly not behind his escape and Tony's stuck in space, so there doesn't seem to be anyone around that could've helped him. Alternatively, if time travel is a major plot point, could there be some convoluted timey-wimey reason for his release? How Long Has It Been Since Avengers: Infinity War? Over the last few months, one of the things we'd come to accept about Avengers 4, based on common theories and reports, was that it would include a sizeable time jump. Sources pointed to it opening several years after the events of the Decimation and things being very different from where we last saw them. Well, clearly that info wasn't true as the Endgame trailer presents a story that picks up relatively soon after IW. However, how soon is it? Some of the evidence suggests that it's been a while, but other stuff suggests it hasn't been that long at all. For one, Tony appears to have been on the Benatar, slowly running out of resources, for a fair amount of time. Think about it: the ship would surely have enough grub for all the Guardians onboard and yet Tony's had enough time to make his way through it all. On the other hand, the scene in which Black Widow assesses the full damage of Thanos' actions heavily implies that we're picking up very soon after IW - she, Steve and Bruce have presumably only just arrived back at the Avengers facility after the battle of Wakanda. Cap has also had a shave and reverted to his Captain America: The Winter Soldier suit, but that doesn't necessarily tell us much. There's still enough evidence to suggest a time jump takes place - remember, Emma Fuhrmann is playing an older Cassie Lang - but the trailer hints that Avengers: Endgame is more of a direct sequel to Infinity War than we were expecting.
