While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has provided us with an abundance of incredible films and unforgettable scenes, it's also gotten a free pass far too often for its "meh" moments. Its neighbor, the DCEU, gets kicked in the groin for every stumble (and perceived failure), but the MCU chuckles and pretends it was actually part of the plan to fall down spectacularly. Make no mistake: no cinematic franchise is perfect. There are plenty of gaffes and cringe-worthy moments, so it's only fair that the cons are highlighted just as much as the praise. The Finale (Iron Man 3) When we talk about the worst films in the MCU, Iron Man 3 ranks quite high amongst the pack. While the film was trekking along just fine for the most part, the twist involving Ben Kingsley's character actually being Trevor Slattery instead of the Mandarin halted all the momentum gathered. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?! Even so, most people defended the final battle between Tony Stark and Aldrich Killian since it involved an army of Iron Man suits and Pepper Potts' Extremis powers. It was big and over the top, and allowed Tony's faithful love interest to get her spot in the sun for once in the series. Sounds cool, doesn't it? But it sucked. Much like the rest of the movie, it was a teasing build-up to a disappointingly flat climax. Not only should this have been a gargantuan showdown between Iron Man and Mandarin (the real one), but it also turned Guy Pearce's Killian into a massive chump in the process. Star-Lord's Dance-Off With Ronan (Guardians Of The Galaxy) Honestly, if you loved the dance-off between Star-Lord and Ronan in Guardians of the Galaxy but hated the "Martha!" scene in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, you're a hypocrite. Yes, James Gunn's space epic is supposed to be a funny film, but this scene had so much cringe in it that it appeared as if it were actually parodying itself. Was it inspired by Spaceballs or something? Look, the film is terrific and oodles of fun; however, this scene remains a major WTF moment that many of us still can't believe happened. Sure, Star-Lord loves his music (it's shoved down our throats at every opportunity), but does he need to find a way to include it in EVERY scene? At the end of the day, this dance-off killed Ronan's vibe and made him out to be another incompetent villain, which is something that Marvel struggles with across the mediums right now. While Gunn went for the hilarious, it actually came out rather lame. The Hulk And Black Widow's "Romance" (Avengers: Age Of Ultron) It's kind of weird how the MCU constantly pushes Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow as a love interest for the male Avengers. Poor lady seems like she's doomed to be passed around from hero to hero like she's a copy of Super Mario 64. The most ridiculous attempt at a love story, however, was between her and Bruce Banner/Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron. First, Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo have zero chemistry on screen. Every exchange is super awkward and both of them look more baffled by this MCU arranged relationship than anyone else. Second, it cheapens the Black Widow character, because why does she need to have a man in each movie? She's strong enough to be successful on her own. And finally, all this lovey-dovey drama could've been removed from the film's final cut without impacting the story in any way. In other words, it served no narrative purpose. Hopefully, Marvel has learned its lesson from this failed romance and will stop trying to make Scarffalo happen. It doesn't work, so leave it alone. Rhodey Walks Again (Captain America: Civil War) When the news of Captain America: Civil War first broke, many wondered if Marvel would have the guts to kill off Cap like in the source material. Naturally, when we saw that Chris Evans was set to appear in future MCU films, the answer became pretty clear that it was a no. Then came the trailer where Iron Man stood over a fallen James "Rhodey" Rhodes/War Machine, and fans wondered if the MCU had pulled the trigger and done the unthinkable. Would War Machine become a casualty of Tony and Steve's war? When the Russos' film reached its climax, we discovered that Rhodey had only been paralyzed by his fall. Rather than leave his story on a sour note, however, the finale of Captain America: Civil War showed us how he'd regained the use of his legs due to Tony's help. What a pal! Unfortunately, this cheapened the impact of what happened to Rhodey and furthered the belief that Marvel lacks the courage to go down the dark side in its cinematic universe. Yeah, it was probably done with good intentions, but it was poor character development and a narrative shortcut when you think about it. Quicksilver's Death (Avengers: Age Of Ultron) Sadly, Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Quicksilver had to follow Evan Peters' extremely popular rendition of the character from a year earlier in X-Men: Days of Future Past. From the get-go, fans couldn't get behind the MCU's version of the speedster and we think the Avengers: Age of Ultron producers realized it, too. So, when Quicksilver shielded Hawkeye from a hail of bullets and subsequently died, it was meant to be his graceful departure from this universe. He died a heroic death, as a warrior who gave his life for another to live. Rest in peace, Quickie… Unfortunately, his passing had little to no effect since none of us really cared about Pietro Maximoff in this movie. It turned into a "well, that sucks for him" moment instead of one where we reached for the tissues. Also, Elizabeth Olsen's overacting as she felt her twin brother die made for more laughter than sorrow. Now, if Hawkeye had been the one to kick the bucket, that would've been a major talking point. Crossbones' Inclusion (Captain America: Civil War) We don't know about you, but we think Frank Grillo's Brock Rumlow was one of the best things about Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That's why when we found out he'd be appearing in Captain America: Civil War under his more recognized name, Crossbones, the excitement reached schoolgirl giddy. When the images of Crossbones on set were unveiled to the public, it appeared as if the Russo brothers had done right by the Captain America foe. Subsequently, the film kicked off with a huge Rumlow versus Avengers fight scene, and it looked like the villain was going to be a big part of the Civil War proceedings. But then he blew himself up like a suicide bomber as he attempted to kill Cap. What?! While you might argue that his actions were what led to Tony and Steve's fallout, it was a mighty disappointing end to the Cap villain. In continuity, Crossbones has been a major thorn in Steve's side and even teamed up with Red Skull to put an end to the Avenger. Yet, in Captain America: Civil War, he was nothing more than cannon fodder. Ant-Man Versus Falcon (Ant-Man) Despite what the Internet will tell you, Scott Lang/Ant-Man's climatic battle with Darren Cross/Yellowjacket on top of the train play set was awesome. It was one of the most unique settings in Marvel films and perfectly suited the characters and tone of Ant-Man. The most disappointing scene, though, was Scott's fight with Sam Wilson/Falcon outside of the Avengers' headquarters. While it looked enticing in the trailers, the whole affair didn't exactly electrify the audience. Moreover, if you want the Avengers HQ protected, you'd best choose a better guard than Falcon. How many people have already whooped his butt in the MCU? Even Scott's nifty big and small transformations couldn't hide the fact that this seemed more like a drunk brawl between Bebop and Rocksteady than two Avengers. It might've served as an appetizer for Captain America: Civil War, but it tasted more like the bland broccoli and boiled steak that your grandmother feeds you. Give us the train scene over this snoozer any day of the week. Iron Man's Drunk Fight With War Machine (Iron Man 2) Even before Iron Man 2 was released, we were over the moon with the promise that we'd see Rhodey take up the mantle of War Machine. After all, it had been teased in the first movie, with Rhodey looking at the suit and saying, "Next time, baby." The moment eventually came at Tony Stark's birthday party. After Tony consumed far too much booze, he began to mess around in the Iron Man suit and endanger his guests' lives. It was up to Rhodey to put on the armored suit and stop the tomfoolery from reaching grave circumstances. And this led to a full-on, iron-powered brawl between the two friends and a fair amount of destruction followed, too. It certainly wasn't a few slaps and nipple twists. While it was cool to finally see War Machine in action, it could've taken place under better circumstances (and against an actual bad guy). It's generally frowned upon to beat up drunk people (especially in public), and Rhodey seemed to have no issue with smacking his BFF around. If he were our friend, he wouldn't be invited over for a BBQ ever again - that's for sure.
