8 Questions We Have After Watching Suicide Squad

When it was first announced that DC and Warner Bros. were planning on making Suicide Squad, a movie based on a fairly obscure team of supervillains, the question on many people’s lips was 'why?' Once we saw the terrific trailers, though, that question quickly morphed into 'can it live up to all the hype?' That latter question is now a matter of contention, as the movie is a lot more divisive than expected. Instead, we now have a whole host of other questions about the film on our lips. As with most superhero movies that form one part of a big, sprawling universe, Suicide Squad left us with quite a few things to chew on by the time the credits rolled (and then even more by the time the credits finished). As such, here are eight dangling plot threads that we're still wondering about after watching Suicide Squad. Warning: spoilers for the movie will be freely discussed within… 8) What Does The Mid-Credits Scene Mean For The Future? Just to shake things up, let’s start with the final scene of the movie. In it, Amanda Waller meets Bruce Wayne for a secret deal. If he protects Waller from the fallout of Midway City and helps her hush it up, she'll give him some handy files about the metahumans he wants to track down. This scene raises a lot of questions, but thankfully they're quite easy to answer. Clearly, Bruce getting those files directly leads into his making contact with the likes of Aquaman and the Flash in Justice League (which we saw in the Comic-Con trailer). And how can he protect Waller, as he claims? Well, possibly by talking to some of his well-connected business contacts. However, it’s more likely that he will do so with the help of his new superfriends. 7) What Exactly Was The Enchantress’ Plan? It’s hard not to say that the worst thing about Suicide Squad is Enchantress and how completely ineffectual she is as a villain. For starters, her big apocalyptic plan is left frustratingly unexplained. As she explains at one point, Enchantress is bitter that the world she used to rule thousands of years ago now worships machines. So, in a delicious bit of irony to bring about humanity’s downfall, she builds her own machine (or big trash portal in the sky) to, um… Any ideas? Well, presumably her ‘machine’ would destroy a lot of the manmade world but leave mankind alive, ready to fall at her feet again like the good ol’ days. So, while it’s not too hard for us to fill in the gaps, this still shows a disappointingly lazy attitude to storytelling. 6) What Was Waller Playing At? Speaking of Enchantress, at the start of the film Waller is confidently using the volatile ancient witch as her own special ops agent. As she explains to her bosses, she can control Enchantress because she is in possession of her heart (which is outside of her body for some reason – just go with it). Did Waller think she could control such a powerful being – in particular, one who can teleport wherever she likes? All it took for Enchantress to get loose was a quick lapse in judgement from Rick Flag and she was free to snatch the jar containing her brother and wreak havoc. Shouldn’t Waller have predicted that something like this would happen? Does she just like manipulating people that much that she would put the world in danger? You don’t need to be Dr. Harleen Quinzel to tell that this woman is a serious control freak. 5) What Is El Diablo? El Diablo is one of the unexpected plus points of Suicide Squad. No one was expecting such a lowgrade villain from the comics to be one of the film’s best characters, but Jay Hernandez offers a great performance as the tragic hero who can’t control his pyrotechnic powers. He even gets a heroic sacrifice where he goes against Enchantress’ monstrous brother and reveals himself to be a big fire demon. Wait, what? Yes, even comic book fans won’t be able to explain this one, as the character does not possess such an ability in the comics. As he can go toe to toe with Incubus, we can assume that El Diablo’s true form is another ancient entity, like the Enchantress family. Given his name, we could even speculate that he is in fact the devil himself. 4) Why Were There So Many Plot Holes? Suicide Squad is sadly a film so riddled with plot holes that it just falls apart the more you think about it. Here are just a few unexplained moments that we picked up on. Just who is shooting at the helicopter when the Squad arrive? Why does Rick’s flashback claim Enchantress escaped after they visited a subway when an early scene suggested she left him in a hotel room? Why does Boomerang leave the bar and then randomly appear with the team again in the next shot? How do they all beat Harley to the top of the building when she’s in an elevator? So, just why are there so many plot holes? While we don’t yet know how good the first cut was, it's clear that the inconsistencies of the movie come from the harsh final edit. Speaking of which... 3) What Happened To The Joker? Many who were excited to see a lot of Jared Leto’s take on the Joker in Suicide Squad were left disheartened when the character disappeared for most of the second half of the movie, after apparently dying in a helicopter crash. Of course, the Joker isn’t dead as he returns to break Harley out of jail at the end of the film. But just how did he survive? We saw the helicopter crash and burn and everything. Well, the answers to this would probably have been answered in the original cut of the film. Joker was to have appeared again just before the big climax, asking Harley to come with him. In a character-defining moment, she would have defied her puddin’ and stayed with her friends to save the world. 2) Where Were The Justice League? Bless, the DCEU is growing up. It’s only three films old and already we’re asking the question that we’ve been putting to Marvel movies for years – where the hell are the big gun heroes? Even if the Justice League isn’t actually formed at this point, you would think that at least one of the active superheroes around – which includes Batman, Wonder Woman and the Flash – would think to stop by Midway City and help out. It was a pretty difficult event to miss, they must have heard about it. In fact, why didn’t Waller have the idea to form a superhero team on her own, seeing as she had those files on metahumans. Why did she jump to the idea of attempting to reform criminals instead? Trying to work this woman out is like banging your head against a wall. 1) When Will We See The Squad Next? Despite the unfortunate problems with Suicide Squad, we really are interested in seeing the assorted team members of Task Force X again in the near future. The film suggests there are more adventures to come for Harley Quinn, in particular, as she escapes to rule Gotham with the Joker again at the end. So, will there be a Suicide Squad 2? It would be nice to think so, as it could attempt to make up for this one’s deficiencies, but it's probably too early to say. Though reviews have not been kind, it's raking in quite a bit of cash. That will be the real test of its success, after all. If it doesn’t get a sequel, we could well see them turn up in other movies. For instance, Boomerang in The Flash or just about half the team in the Batman solo film. Either way, we highly doubt this is the last we have seen of the Suicide Squad.
