7 Things We Learned From The Power Rangers Trailer

Ever since a movie reboot of 90s kids favourite Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was announced to be in the works over two years ago, fans have been split on the idea. Some have welcomed the idea of a modern take on the colour-coordinated cadets while others think a new version would lose the spirit of the original. What we really needed was a trailer to find out exactly what route the new movie would take.

This isn’t something we learnt from the trailer itself, but the Power Rangers panel at NYCC gave us a juicy reveal that will please hardcore fans – classic character Goldar will appear in the movie.

For those not in the know, Goldar was the chief henchman of villainess Rita Repulsa. Despite his fearsome appearance, the gold-plated, blue-faced griffin-like creature was often played for laughs – similar to Shredder’s goons Bebop and Rocksteady from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He was often paired with his lady love Scorpina, whose scantily clad warrior look has been aped for the movie’s version of Rita.

While this is a pleasant surprise, there’s still no word on whether two other icons of the show will appear – Rita’s evil husband Lord Zedd or Tommy the Green Ranger, the most popular Ranger of all-time. Given that, while it’s possible that the pair are being kept secret for shock appearances later on the film, it’s more likely that these big draws are being held back for the sequel.

After all, considering that Lionsgate and Saban Entertainment are hoping to get seven films out of this franchise, it wouldn’t be surprising if they had a long term plan in place.
