7 Things We Learned From The Power Rangers Trailer

Ever since a movie reboot of 90s kids favourite Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was announced to be in the works over two years ago, fans have been split on the idea. Some have welcomed the idea of a modern take on the colour-coordinated cadets while others think a new version would lose the spirit of the original. What we really needed was a trailer to find out exactly what route the new movie would take.

What’s immediately apparent from the trailer is that the tone is a million miles away from the cheesy camp (or campy cheese) of the original show. From the sallow faces of its young stars to the washed-out cinematography, the teaser is eager to make clear is that this is not the Power Rangers of your youth and is aimed at a much more mature audience, chiefly the comic book movie crowd.

Suitably, then, the suits are held back until the final moments, and even then we only get the briefest glimpse of the Red Ranger. It is very clear from this that Power Rangers – as weird as it might sound – is from the Batman Begins school of superhero filmmaking. It will presumably flesh out the characters behind the costumes first before we actually get to “Morphin’ time.”

We also get a hint of romance in the trailer, as Jason and Kimberly the Pink Ranger (Naomi Scott) are seen locking lips. This is something we haven’t seen before as Kimberly is most known for dating Tommy in the original show. Even so, the series never devoted a whole lot of time to developing a believable relationship, so a major emphasis on any sort of romance will be new.
