7 Things We Learned From The Power Rangers Trailer

Ever since a movie reboot of 90s kids favourite Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was announced to be in the works over two years ago, fans have been split on the idea. Some have welcomed the idea of a modern take on the colour-coordinated cadets while others think a new version would lose the spirit of the original. What we really needed was a trailer to find out exactly what route the new movie would take.

2) Elizabeth Banks Is Surprisingly Sinister

Despite being the big bad of Mighty Morphin, Rita Repulsa is an incredibly ineffectual villain. From her base on the moon, she repeatedly sends down ridiculous monsters to Earth to take down her mortal enemies, a tactic that only ever ends in failure. Like many supervillains, poor old Rita never thought to face the Rangers herself and just kill them and be done with it.

The movie’s Rita, however, seems to be a very different beast. In a tense scene in the trailer, she corners Trini in her bedroom and warns her that she has killed many Rangers in the past – a new bit of backstory for the character which really ups the threat. There was some doubt that Elizabeth Banks, mainly a comedic actress, was the right choice for the part. But from what we see here, she does a great job – savouring every evil moment with a steely growl. She’s definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Also, Rita personally targeting Trini is something we’ve seen in the promotional images as well, but why is she so interested in Trini on her own, rather than the whole gang? Given that this is new to the franchise, we’ll have to wait until the film releases to find out.
