8 X-Men Characters Who Need To Be Brought Back To The Big Screen

The first two X-Men movies were superb, but the franchise appeared to be done for after awful releases like X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Thankfully, things started looking up with The Wolverine and turned a major corner with X-Men: Days of Future Past last year (which no doubt had something to do with Bryan Singer returning to the franchise). However, all of those movies made some big mistakes. These were mostly down to how they handled certain characters, with the frequent cameos which were meant to make fans happy turning out to almost always be a disappointment. That begs the question; which mutant heroes and villains should return somewhere down the line? With Fox expanding the X-Men franchise in a major way through TV shows and spinoffs, there are any number of places these familiar faces could show up, whether they're played by the same actors or completely recast (which is definitely the best option in some cases). So, on that note, here are 8 X-Men characters that the franchise needs to bring back. 8) Siryn Played by Shauna Kain, Siryn made a cameo appearance in X2: X-Men United when her damaging sonic scream saw William Stryker's men forced to take her down with a tranquillizer. She was saved by Colossus (another mutant making a cameo appearance here before taking on a much larger role in next year's Deadpool movie), and showed up very briefly at the funeral of Professor X in X-Men: The Last Stand. With a new timeline now in place, having Siryn show up in the next X-Men movie makes perfect sense. After all, her father played a key role in X-Men: First Class, so there's some history there which could be expanded on in a future movie, especially as it's believed that he was among those murdered by Bolivar Trask. Given her relationship with Deadpool in the comic books, Siryn showing up there instead could also work. 7) Rogue This fan-favourite mutant was a focal point of the original X-Men trilogy, and the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past confirmed that she's now living happily in the new future that movie created. That obviously complicates matters when it comes to bringing the character back, as she can't really appear in the X-Men: Apocalypse sequel which will presumably be set in the 90s. Of course, many fans were hoping Anna Paquin would be asked to reprise the role in Gambit seeing as they have years worth of history in the comic books, but the actress recently confirmed that won't be the case. The next Wolverine movie could work then, but regardless of when and where this happens, it's about time that we see Rogue portrayed on the big screen as she is in the comics; a flying, tough as nails badass who is actually one of the most powerful X-Men. 6) Multiple Man Multiple Man is a great character, something which makes it all the more frustrating that he was squandered in X-Men: The Last Stand (then again, so was every other mutant unfortunate enough to be sandwiched in for a cameo). In that film, he played a very minor role as a member of Magneto's Brotherhood, but the movie at least gave us an idea of the potential James Madrox has on the big screen. With the ability to create almost countless duplicates of himself, recent comic books have actually seen some of those doubles take on a life and personality of their own, a potentially fascinating dynamic to explore. With Fox developing TV shows revolving around the Hellfire Club and Legion, it's not clear what the status of the long rumoured X-Factor Investigations series is, but that would certainly be a great place for Multiple Man to return to this universe. 5) Lady Deathstrike Of all the characters listed here, it could be argued that Lady Deathstrike was perhaps handled better than them all. However, the fact that she was little more than Stryker's mind controlled pawn meant that she had little to no personality, despite that downright awesome fight scene with Wolverine at the end of X2: X-Men United. Of course, with a new timeline in place, the events of that movie never happened, and Kelly Hu being recast obviously makes the most sense. It's hard to say where Deathstrike could show up; Wolverine's next movie is certainly one option, though there's a risk that will feel like a retread of old ground. The Deadpool franchise could do something fun with her, but having the villain given some much needed personality as a big bad and having her face off with the X-Men would ultimately be just as good. 4) Juggernaut Arguably one of the greatest X-Men villains of all time, the Juggernaut was handled in a predictably appalling fashion when he showed up being played by Vinnie Jones in X-Men: The Last Stand ("I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!"). A reasonably big guy in a plastic looking padded costume is not the best way to handle this villain, and so it would be much better if the next iteration were to be enhanced by CGI. As long as they got the design and look of the character right, of course. An interesting fact about Cain Marko is that he actually became a member of the X-Men for a time, but ended up leaving when it became apparent that his teammates would never view him as a hero. That could be worth exploring should Fox decide not to go down the route of bringing him back as a villain regardless of where he shows up (hopefully in a movie where the fact that he's Professor X's step-brother can be touched on in some way). 3) Emma Frost January Jones came under fire for her performance in X-Men: First Class, something which is arguably quite unfair for the most part. The movie did a good job of portraying her powers and the Mad Men star was certainly sexy enough for the Hellfire Club's White Queen, but regardless of whether or not Fox end up recasting the role, this is a character who should definitely be brought back in some form. Hopefully she'll use an English accent this time, while having her join the X-Men as she did in the comics would also shake up these movies in a major way. Of course, as it's thought that she's dead, that complicates things somewhat, but there are definitely certain ways around that. With it sounding like the Hellfire TV series is actually going to be set in the 1960, common sense says that Frost will show up there in some form. 2) Iceman Like Rogue, the fact that Iceman was seen in that new timeline at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past will make it difficult for Bobby Drake to rejoin the X-Men any time soon. It's a shame too, because we only got a glimpse of how the heroic character should be portrayed in that movie, as he went full on Iceman and started sliding around the place, which he never really did in his rather tame appearances in X-Men and X2: X-Men United. Recent comic books have seen Iceman use his abilities in inventive new ways, growing to the size of a skyscraper and basically being portrayed as one of the most powerful mutants in existence. Chances are we could be waiting to see Iceman until a reboot somewhere down the line, though that long rumoured X-Men 4 would certainly be a pretty cool (pun intended) to place him. 1) Sabretooth Both Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber have indicated that Sabretooth could make his return in the next Wolverine movie, and that happening would be downright awesome. Bryan Singer handled the character very poorly in the first X-Men, and while X-Men Origins: Wolverine was pretty terrible all in all, Schreiber's awesome take on this villain and the chemistry between him and Jackman is impossible to fault. As so many characters are off limits to Fox when it comes to adapting Old Man Logan, they'd be foolish not to bring back Sabretooth for Wolverine's final battle, and if they really want to shake things up, they could follow the comic books by having him (sort of) decide to become a good guy and join the X-Men. For the time being though, it's absolutely essential that we get to see the definitive Sabretooth on the big screen come 2017.
